My dad just suggested that you be able to drop items like written books on the ground somewhere for other players to find.
At first I was thinking, "But they'll despawn and stuff." But then I thought, "Why not allow players to place books (and maybe maps or notes or the like) in such a way that they aren't an item but something like a flower pot - decoration which can be picked up by someone else, and doesn't despawn?"
It'd be neat to be able to put a "lost" book, and a backpack maybe, a couple of decorative objects that could be as if lost by a traveler (whether they dropped them while fleeing, or got attacked and this is all that's left, or whatever). And it's a bit more organic than leaving little chests everywhere.
Note: The placeable backpack would be like a little 4-slot thing, maybe 8 slots, not very big. It's not for storage, it's for ambiance.
I never really looked over what an Item Frame could do, but from the description I guess it's actually pretty close to what I want. I'm guessing it's about as close as is reasonable for a game, actually.
The one thing it doesn't solve is the dropped backpack. Would still like to see a tiny chest you can drop that looks like a backpack and has only room for a couple items in it - and, rather importantly, doesn't give the person who found it an actual chest to use. Because I can see its applications in custom maps, and handing out chests might break the feel I'm going for.

My nephews and I have started posting Minecraft videos on my YouTube channel! Fairly random, but enjoyable.
General schedule is 4 PM Mon-Fri and 10 AM Saturdays. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
I take it back. The item frame is insufficient for what I wish to do. This is because it requires the side of a block, and can't be placed on the ground.
However, it does seem that it could easily be altered so you could place it on the ground. (I'd hope with an update that also brought in floor decorations such as rugs or carpet squares. Same mechanic.) So here's hoping it'll get updated in the near future.
