Kinda unrelated, but one of my favorite mods (Bibliocraft) has different wood textures for everything implemented: http://www.minecraft...dated-05152013/
Kind of unrelated. The mod has mutlicolors for all that it comes with it, not for what currently exists in Minecraft.
Excellent idea. However, I'd reserve it only for the most often used blocks.
Also, a nice way to avoid the "now you have to use all items of the ame wood type only" problem, would be this:
When a crafting recipe allows item IDs that have subvariations using damage values, and the output can also vary by damage value, the game does this:
-a- Set a vector of all possible damage values to zero.
-b- Count how many of each damage value exist in the ingredients and upate the vector acconrdingly.
For example, if you try to craft a doro using the following planks: 1 oak (damage value 0), 1 spruce (damage value 1), 2 birch d(amage value 2) and 2 jungle tree planks (damage value 3), your vector would be:
Vector = { 1, 1, 2, 2 }.
-c- Set the maxfound at 0, parse each of the values in the vector: if that value is bigger than maxfound, set maxfound to that value and set "output damage value" to the index in the vector.
Ergo, the ingredient used the most will win. and in case of a tie, it is the wood type that was added first in the game (i.e. the one with a smaller damage value) that will win.
Easy, simple, and can be apply automatically to ALL items recipes flagged as using this not neccessarily only wood ones. For example, walls and mossy stone walls could use the same thing.
No new blocks, just new types.
BTW, if all of these happen, I calculate there would be 42 new items... what a coincidence!
Quick FYI it is a new block, as the game has to upload a new block, but with the old texture recouloured, so it technically is another block.
I support couloured beds and bookshelves BTW

Sticks, Doors, etc. don't need to be multicoloured, and it would be stupid if they were, because they're not actually any specific wood colour. However, buttons, fences, and pressure plates should. Support, but not really.
Great ideas, though I kinda wish wood blocks themselves would get re-textured, mainly the planks, I don't really like the texture for them, and while I don't mind using a texture pack, using default is preferred for me. Perhaps different colored wooden tools and boats would be neat too?
The limited block space "bug" means that there are just a few blocks left that can be added. This is why the multicoloured wood was never added, because there wasn't enough room for the corresponding half slabs/stairs.
However, they DID add multicolor half slabs and stairs. So that means it's possible for them to add multicolors for other items.

Considering we've had the texture for 3 years I doubt we will get a new one.
I like your idea of buttons and pressure plates, but everything else, no.
I'm not trying to be mean, but while everyone has been dreaming of this update, I've been dreading it.
All of the new wood items would take up so much inventory space, and if I ran out of one type of wood, then I wont be able to finish what I'm building with another type. I refer to this as patching it up. The stairs update was annoying at first, but I got used to it. But I will definitely not get used to having to carry 4 kinds of sticks and ladders around. If you think about it, it's kind of ridiculous that everyone is complaining about what color your frames and sticks and ladders are. You barely notice it. And you wont even be able to tell what color stick it is, it will just take up tons of inventory space! Not to crush all of your dreams, but it will be a huge inconvenience to us. You love it now, but when you want diamonds and your inventory space is full of wood stuff, you'll see.

I don't get why people keep using this as a con.
Is it too hard to use one wood type or to carry just one wood type?
To make people a little more happy, I've been thinking of developing an idea of converting wood items to other types.
Does anyone have their opinions on how the wood converting should work?
I hate to break it to you guys, thiscan't ever happen in minecraft. When Notch made the game, he wasn't the best coder in the world (as he has admitted on The Word of Notch) and two features weren't added: two blocks occupying the same space, and a limited amount of block space. Since minecraft has been developed and updated so much, these two "bugs" are fortified and can never be changed (unless most of the game is made from scratch all over again!). The limited block space "bug" means that there are just a few blocks left that can be added. This is why the multicoloured wood was never added, because there wasn't enough room for the corresponding half slabs/stairs.
So to summarise, there are a few fatal bugs in minecraft which mean that this amount of new blocks cant be added.
Don't mean to throw this in your face but.... actually I do. FORGE ALLOWS YOU TO DO THIS!!! THAT'S WHY SO MANY PEOPLE USE IT FOR BIG MODS!!!

Technically it is, but not entirely. It's the same block, but with an extra value with it that gives it's texture and name.
I didn't keep all of them, but i can give you some.
I did have some... but they were terrible.
And the chest textures made in the topic i linked my post to doesn't have them available.
However, they DID add multicolor half slabs and stairs. So that means it's possible for them to add multicolors for other items.

Ummm...
They're supposed to be oaked color because that what they're made up of. So it makes complete sense that they would be multicolored.
Fences? But you said colored sticks weren't needed?
That is true, but I still can't help but desire for a different texture for them.
