I like locks and keys, they are very useful. So why not add them to minecraft? (There is no reasoning at all behind this.)
Locks are crafted like this:
For 2 locks. (not a great crafting recipe, but until iron nuggets are added this will have to do)
Keys are crafted like this:
Crafts 2 keys. (This recipe is okay.)
To set a lock to a certain key, you have to put the same 9 digit password on both of them by right-clicking with one. (This will not work on doors, trapdoors, gates, levers, repeaters, chests, dispensers and droppers. More on that later.) Once you click, a screen will come up for you to set the password. Once you set the password, it is ready for use.
Now, locks are useless by themselves. They are used in conjuction with other items.
Doors, gates and trapdoors: You right-click with a lock to place a lock on it. Once it is on the only way to get through the trapdoor/gate/door is by obtaining the correct key. Just right-click on the door with the right key to get through. Note: the only way to get the lock back is by destroying the block. Redstone does not work on locked items.
Levers and repeaters: the same process is used for placing a lock. Once a lock is placed, a key must be use to toggle the switch or change the repeater's setting. Once the key is used on a switch or repeater the lock drops off.
Chests, dispensers and droppers: The same as with doors except that redstone can still operate with these blocks.
All items with locks take much longer then usual to destroy when they have a lock.
Hope you like the idea, if not state why and post you criticism. Have a nice day! Que tengas buen dia!
Actually there's iron doors so you just might make it for chests (even trapped chests) and the other stuff you mentioned expect for trapdoors and fence gates.

The lock can stop a redstone circuit involving an iron door.
Then use creative mode to get ender chest. The lock is the same thing.
And redstone lock, you only need 2 levers for that. For combination lock, it can be as small as your house.
Do you think I would need this in creative mode? As for redstone, you need to be able to access the levers. With a key, you only need to find the door.
This has been suggested a ton, I'm surprised you haven't seen this suggestion before.
The idea is okay, and I do think there should be keys in Minecraft, but not for regular play (although I'm not opposed to it either). 99% of anything with any key item like this is either simple to bypass (mine around a door rather than go through). The real benefit is Adventure Maps, where they need keys to proceed. A gamerule that sets locked blocks to be invincible would also help for Adventure maps.

I'd prefer that the locks be placeable items which behave like switchable redstone torches. The key would be required to change the state of the lock. Place the lock next to a door and turning it "on" with the key would open the door. Turn the lock "off" with the key to close the door.
In order to allow the door to be opened and closed from both sides, locks with the same "key" number would all switch together as long as they were in a loaded chunk.
And I agree that this would mainly be for adventure maps where you couldn't just bash the door down or make your own redstone torch to get the door open.

True, however it does lock certain redstone circuits.

Eff. 4 Dia Pick, or just break the block under it for doors. For chests, dispensers, and furnaces you can use a hopper to steal the stuff.
Didn't know the part about the hopper. Let's make it stop that too.
as for breaking the blocks under doors, I always use obsidian.
However an efficency diamond pick would break the door down.

Efficency diamond pick could also just destoy the obsidian. Eff Diamond Axe destroys chests. Pick for everything else, axe for chests, and your house is looted.

Yup, however the extended amount of time needed to destroy everything gives extra time for the owner to catch them in the act.
I agree very much that Minecraft needs some kind of lock/key system. How it gets implemented is a bit less important to me. I think Mojang can be creative with their solution.
If I was going to do it though, (and I've already done a mod to this effect) I'd have one type of "locked door" item/object, and one "key" item that anyone can craft. The key has 5 gold ingots in its recipe, so it's somewhat expensive, but then it opens any "locked door".
Once that functionality is in place, then it's time to add things like combinations and personal doors. I'd be hesitant to introduce new GUIs for combination locks, but if that turns out to be the easiest way to do it, then so be it. In some ways I feel like vanilla Minecraft should have a very simple system, and leave it to mods to make it more advanced.
Not to mention, there needs to be some kind of world locking protection too, if you're going to be able to make an actual safe space in SMP, since breaking in is super easy.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.

I suppose that would be a nice a alternative way. I might add it.
What happens if you lose the key and forget the pass code? Would you have to destroy the lock and make a new one?
Also, how would keys stack as one stack with multiple differently coded keys would be hard to use/manage if you remove a specific one, and having many unstackable keys would bog inventory space. I realize many locks could be set to one key but if different keys are needed for some reason it would be a good thing to have worked out.
Perhaps some type of keyring-like item with color-coded keys or the like?
Love the idea though, just something I wondered about while reading.

Yes, but for the rest? Maybe I don't have the materials ofr an enderchest? Maybe I want something more compact then redstone.
Thanks!
Doesn't that mean the only use would be for iron doors? Everything else would be easily destroyed.
Yes, but I will make it so that locked items take a while to destroy w/out TNT.

Seems fair. To each their own.

Locks override all redstone.
