Spawners will continue to spawn mobs unless the area is well lit, and cheated-in passive mob spawners will always spawn if there's the right blocks around. I was thinking Mojang should add some Redstone functionality to them.
A Spawner would stop spawning mobs if it's powered, similarly to Hoppers. This would be useful to map-makers to easily turn off spawners, or to have the player flick a lever and "deactivate" an enemy room when they get through, for instance.
Also, a Spawner would output a signal to Comparators that would be one block long for every mob it spawns at once. If a cheaty-Spawner spawns more than 15 mobs at once, though, it would just max out at 15. This might be useful to hook up to command blocks and say "3 mobs spawned!" or even "Wild Zombies Appeared!" or something.
Late idea: /given Spawners will now spawn nothing, and new maps will generate natural spawners as 52:1 without this functionality. 52:0 will, when right-clicked, open a GUI of a full inventory worth of space, but you can only put spawn eggs in. Hoppers can put them in and suck them out, and each egg in them will tell the spawner what to spawn, and multiples will tell the spawner to spawn them all at once. Each individual egg in a stack would tell the spawner to spawn that many of that mob at once, and new data would be added for eggs (if it doesn't exist already) that tells the egg to spawn a mob with armor/a weapon/etc, just like the custom name. Map-makers could be creative with this idea if they have the patience to get timing just right...

Fair idea. To make it simpler, I would suggest that like hoppers, spawning would only be disabled when the spawner IS powered. I especially like the comparator addition (not sure if a BUD would perform the same function, though.)

If they had to be powered, it would break all the current spawners. Maybe some new creative only block that when placed next to a spawner and powered it turns the spawner off?

There's a difference between a hero and a champion. A champion overcomes threats, but a hero overcomes fears.

Then there's also a Youtube channel I'm somewhat involved in.
Also, a new idea for it. Good? You decide...
