Heads in mine craft are great for people who make adventure maps because they can use them to make pseudo NPCs, but it could be nice if those pseudo NPCs looks like the mob or player they were meant to represent. That is where my suggestion for clay golems comes in! They would be constructed like snow golems except instead of snow and pumpkins it would be clay for the bottom two blocks and a head for the top(note: doesn't have to be clay, but I figure the heads would be the limiting factor not the body). Once a mob has been created, it would just be a neutral mob, so creeper clay golems wouldn't explode, and skeleton golems wouldn't shoot arrows ETC. (alternatively they could be passive until aggro-ed?). this would be great for adventure maps because you could have a zombie village, or a creeper village, and not have to change difficulty, so could still be hostile mobs in the creeper village, for example.
What would be really cool, is if you could do this with player heads and custom player heads as well, I enjoy watching the yogscast play through adventure maps, and they have become popular enough that people have made adventure maps around them, wouldn't it be cool if you could have a honeydew mob walking around in your map when he is actually talking? or if there was an adventure map with a steve cloning facility?
Furthermore, this might be usable in survival as well, as w neutral mob wouldn't be game breaking because it wouldn't attack anything. so someone could have a pet enderman in their house.
What does the community think? this is just a passing thought I had at three in the morning so it is probably full of holes, and I would like to hear others opinions
It's a neat idea. I think it should use brick instead of clay blocks though. All golems have to be made from fabricated blocks. Clay blocks occur naturally which means you could just place a head on top of naturally found clay blocks and make a golem, when you should have to place those blocks yourself.
Combined with custom names and such though, this could be a useful tool for adventure maps.
When I saw the title, I thought: "Not another golem..." But this idea sounds actually quite neat. I don't know if it really fits in vanilla Minecraft, because every utility mob there has always an own unique appearence, so they can never look like other mobs. They must be always recognizable as selfmade golems, with in this case just some accents of the presumed mobs. And I think that in vanilla you are always supposed to use your imagination and therefore you can also never have exactly what you want. But it is in any case very suitable for a mod.
I thought of another problem with the unique appearance issue, and that as in my post if you have a creeper village for example and a hostile creeper spawns it could be an issue, so yeah they would have to have some distinguishing characteristics, you are right, and probably something more than a dog collar like ring(my first idea for a fix) because you would want it easy to tell at a glance.

you are right about needing brick, but does a wither count as a golem if we are being technical? cause he is made of soul sand. alternative question, does soul sand ever spawn two deep? I'm not knocking you and I do agree bricks would be better, don't get me wrong, but i am not sure fabricated blocks can now be a hard and fast rule... but yes brick... adds a bit more challenge as well.
thanks for the input guys!
