How about an evolved form of lighting that Incorporates multiple colors rotating each second. I call it, the Disco-Block.
My way on making it -
How you would make the disco-ball is that you need to craft two things. The Ball, and the Stick it hangs off of.
To make the Disco ball, you'd need One block of glowstone, and then 8 of your favorite die colors. Then the result will be the glowstone (off of course), with the sides each of those colors. It wont have 1 side per color, but a mix of all the colors into the glowstone. If I could make an image of it It'd look pretty cool.
Then you need to make the hook part. Okay. So what you would need is One(1) Redstone dust, an iron ingot and a nether fence. The nether fence goes on top, the redstone at the bottom, and the iron in the middle. These have to be straight down under/on top of each other. No opposite order.
Then craft the two together by butting the Stick/hook on top and the colored glowstone under it in any orientation. then place the disco ball on the ceiling wherever you wish. It could bend if you put it on a wall I suppose, but I know them mainly on ceilings.
So that's how to make it.
Badprenup's way of making it -
It's an interesting idea, but I don't like your current implementation of it. Mainly the fact that you suggest adding two new items and their only purpose is to make a third item. I would change it to be one recipe, incorporating the already existing Tripwire Hook into the recipe. I'd also reduce the number of dyes needed to 6, for a reason I will get into in a second. The recipe could be:
DHD
DGD
DRD
H = Hook
D = Any 6 Dye
G = Glowstone
R = Redstone
With this design, you have one dye for each block face. I know you said you it wouldn't be one side per color but what if we take Redstone Signal Strength into account here, where each level of power makes it do something different? Something like
0 - Unpowered, not working
1 - Only top lights up, color is the one from the top left slot of the crafting recipe
2 - Bottom lights up, color is the one from the middle left slot of the recipe
3 - North lights up, color is from bottom left recipe slot
4 - East lights up, color is from top right recipe slot
5 - South lights up, color is from middle right recipe slot
6 - West lights up, color is from bottom right recipe slot
7-12 - All sides light up, color is chosen by signal strength following the same pattern as 1-6
13 - Randomly changes colors every half second
14 - Colors randomly fade into each other every second
15 - Opposite sides (N and S, E and W, T and B ) light up and change randomly every half second
Or it could be whatever you or other posters want. Another possibility is leaving dyes out of it entirely and giving it a GUI when right clicked where you can change what colors are on and what kind of light it makes.
The only problem I see is the technical limitations of it. If it emits entirely clear light with a light level of 15, then it can use a shader effect to do the colors, so it wouldn't be causing constant lighting updates. It would look the same too.
I think it'd be cool to make a crib or a fun entertainment house for friends and other members to chill and party with a cool disco light to be made. I mean, come on. Who doesn't like disco balls? It could be an edition to the redstone blocks/items section. It'd be pretty cool to use/have in my opinion.

From Wikipedia:
Shaders calculate rendering effects on graphics hardware with a high degree of flexibility.
Basically, it can change how something looks without editing the base texture or model of the object. So it can change how lights or blocks look without forcing the light levels to be changed repeatedly. It's actually a lot more complicated, and I don't fully understand it all myself, but basically, it is what we use for tons of effects in film and games, and would likely be the most efficient way of adding any kind of colored or dynamic lights to the game.

What do you guys think?
It should be called the "Disco-Block" Not a ball... No balls.. >:[
Still a fun little Idea though.

Thanks for the comment on what shaders are Badprenup!
So Im guessing everyone supports this? I'll add up Badprenup's method into my post. Can I edit in a poll to this topic?
E: I added a poll.
