Note blocks are nice, but rather boring with their limited note range and being limited to percussive or plucked instruments only.
Instead of the instrument being set by the block it's on and the note being set by the number of right-clicks, why not have a right-click open an interface?
In the interface, you'd be able to use a picture "spinner" to select the instrument and a note+number spinner to set the exact note to play. You may also be able to set the "volume" (within practical limits) so the note could be heard from further away than now.
If the instrument was sustained, like an organ, the note would continue until the redstone signal was removed from the block.
If the instrument was purely percussive, the note would react as the instrument would. So for example, a piano sound would tend to sustain and only slowly die while the redstone signal continued, but would die quickly when the redstone signal was removed (as a piano note is damped when the player releases the piano key).
This would make music in Minecraft easier to produce and also far more fun.
I definately agree to this, expecially the idea where the note is consistant while its powered and the interface idea is good too, it would also save time making songs (which is probably why not many make songs often)
Definitely support. I just finished putting together a simple song and it was way more work than it needed to be, and really not as loud as I'd like it to be.
Certainly worth support, i hope this becomes a hot topic. It'd be very nice for non-pvp freebuild servers and adventure maps especially, not to mention that note blocks as they are are rather difficult to tune properly, since you can only change the pitch upwards.
I tried to craft this suggestion so that there would be minimal disruption to existing note blocks after updating. Mostly, you'd just need to open the interface in each note block and then set the instrument.
Alternatively, it may be possible for any note block which does not yet have an instrument set in the interface to automatically take an instrument sound based on the block it's sitting on, when the chunk is loaded.
Or, the default "instrument" could be to take the instrument sound from the block type the note block is sitting on, with the option to override that by changing the instrument spinner in the interface.
Either this idea is nowhere near as good as I thought or many players have decided to "ignore" me. I don't mind being ignored, but I do mind a good idea being ignored and I believe this is a good idea. If you think it's not a good idea, I'd appreciate feedback on why not.
