Well, the reason it is not those sizes by default is because of the strain it causes on lower-end computers. However with the recent texture pack updates you no longer require a patcher program to have textures of those sizes, so you can easily install a texture pack, personally I recently installed the John Smith 32x32 texture pack for snapshot 13w05b and it's working perfectly without a patcher.

Curse PremiumSome people can't handle 128x128 texture packs. Most computers that handle 16x16 texture packs can handle 32x32 as well.
