I don't know about anyone else, but something that's annoyed me is trying to find villagers that -want- what it is you're trading. Why do I have to go find them if they want things?
So... why isn't it that holding up something a villager would want doesn't make them look over or call out or even better come over and want to trade? It doesn't have to open up the window, but for things like wheat or books or various ingots... if a villager wants it they should express actual interest in it right?
I think that holding something a villager wants to trade should make them send out green or red or blue particles, similar to when they're happy with a trade
What would be very convienient would be to hold anything in your hand, and see the villagers that want to trade it starting to follow you, like cows with wheat or chicken with seeds. And it would help to move the villagers too!
I don't think they should run up to you necessarily (that would get old real quick), but if you're holding an object they want to trade and they can see you, they should stop running around (important), look at you, and start jumping up and down.
They should not do this with emeralds though. It'd be really annoying.
It's a pretty nice idea that if implemented could lead to a pretty big reformat of how the NPC's will function in the future. That last part referring to the AI of course, it would allow for the furthering of NPC interaction, leading to players being able to set up shops, etc. Full support for the reinvention of the AI and this suggestion.

But yeah... it's like, freshly cook up fish then holding it... hear that stampede coming. XD
Or maybe hold up freshly crafted armor to have an eager enchanter wanting to imbue it with interesting enchantments.
It just would certainly help out I'd imagine to have some sort of signal or interaction take place especially in highly populated villages.
