The new addition of the scoreboard in the snapshots brings a lot to custom maps and team games. But I'm sure we can all agree, it could use some improvements and expansions. I'm sure the Mojang team is working on expanding it (since it's still in the snapshot phase), but let's see if we can't help them out with some more ideas.
I'll be starting a list with my own suggestions, and if I see other good ones that people like I'll add them to this post.
- Scoreboard can give points when a certain item is gathered, including items named at an Anvil (including named mobs) - Scoreboard (via command block) can remove items from player inventory in exchange for score
I know they seem like pretty basic suggestions, but just these three things would have a huge impact on custom maps. They would allow item gathering "quests" that reward you with scores, allow you to "pay" for things with your score (rather than just test for min/max), and much more. With just these few simple changes, the entire dynamic of custom maps could change. The best part about scoreboard/command block changes is that they don't negatively effect anyone because they're completely optional and outside of normal gameplay. With that in mind, I'd like to see them expanded as much as possible because really any addition made is a great boost for the community, and as per above doesn't hurt anyone.
You come to a village in my custom map. In the middle is the Elder of the village. He needs you to go kill a rogue iron golem that has been terrorizing the village, known as "Ratchet." You must also bring back the rose it carries. By flipping a lever, you "accept" the quest. It sends a pulse to the command block, which now tests if you have killed the mob named "Ratchet," and if you have gathered a rose. You go into the forest and slay Ratchet. You get 1 scoreboard point for that, and 1 point (to a separate objective) for gathering the rose. You go back to the village and hit a separate lever to turn in the quest that tests for each of these objective points, and then takes away the points when you have them (so that you can't gain the rewards repeatedly). When you test positive for having both objective points, it gives you 500 points towards another objective called "gold" or "rupees," etc. The Elder thanks you for saving his village, and points to a nearby store. It has a big wall with item frames on it displaying different armor, tools, and weaponry. Using command blocks it tests for "gold" objective points. If you have enough to buy something, you hit the lever, it takes the points from you, and emits a redstone signal to a dropper, which then gives you the item you paid for.
In this way you can have tons of wildly varying quests throughout a massive world, but one set of currency that could work in any shop. Personally, I think it would be a huge boon for Minecraft and bring (especially RPG) custom maps to a whole new level. The uses for this are endless.
Score can already be removed.
"scoreboard players remove <player> <objective> <count>"
Awesome, I didn't see that on the wiki page. Any thoughts on testing for items and/or removing items in exchange for score? These are kind of doable right now with lots of redstone, water, pressure plates, and hoppers but space is important in custom maps. I still feel this would add a lot to the game.

I do too, but I also feel you can do so much with the scoreboard already that this idea is not something I'm going to be overly enthusiastic about supporting.

To be honest I'm hoping deep down inside that this is already planned and they just haven't implemented yet. It's not so much an issue of "why would we add this feature" as "why would we not." As far as I'm aware it would be a few minutes of coding tops, and there's no downside.
Here's hoping anyways, and if this does get added I promise the community a giant open-world RPG map to celebrate! Before you could only pull that off with mods!
