I'm sure this has been suggested before, but I wanted to give my concept of how it would work.
Accessing the Dream World
Players get teleported to the Dream World if they sleep in a bed at night. In SMP, not all players need to be sleeping at the same time for this to work.
Basics of the Dream World
While in the Dream world, the player's screen is blurred at the edges, with the classic "dream vision" effect that basically every game and movie does for dreams/flashbacks.
Players appear on a huge floating island, next to a bed, which can be used to exit the Dream World. They have no items or armor. The sky is gray, and the entire world is fairly dark. The bottom of the island is bedrock. There are few layers in the world. Blocks cannot be broken normally.
Standard mobs do not spawn. Players can see transparent, blue ghostly versions of mobs, but they cannot be touched or interacted with in any way and will completely ignore the player. Players can see ghostly forms of each other, but again can't interact. Players can see the beds of other players, but they cannot use or break them.
Shades
Shades are guardians of the Dream World. The more time a player spends in the dream world, the more aggressive Shades become. Shades spawn specifically to target a certain player, and their strength and speed is based on the time the player has been in the Dream World that night.
Leaving the Dream World
There are three ways that players can exit the Dream World.
1. Using a bed while in the Dream World.
2. The night ending.
3. Dying, either by Shades or by falling off the island.
More Specific Stuff I Didn't Cover
1. There should be a way to gain the ability to break blocks, fight ghost mobs, and fight shades normally.
2. There should be naturally occurring structures, like Dream Fortresses.
3. There should be multiple special "biomes", like Nightmare biomes.
4. There should be some incentive for going to the Dream World.
Kinda reminds me of Inception, so why not add a little bit more of that aspect into it? If you right click another player's bed in Multiplayer, you enter their dream and can interact with them. The shades in their dream will aggro on you, and you can't leave their dream, but you can enter other player's dreams THROUGH their dream. Also, the bed where you enter the world doesn't make you leave, it just puts you into a deeper level of dream that has better loot in it. However, the deeper the level, the stronger the shades.
