The idea started with the new feature for equipping armor with dispensers. If you were one block away, the armor would become equipped on you. A similar thing also happens with flint and steel, and bone meal, where it's effects can happen from one block away. There are two main parts to this idea.
One is, what if it could be done for breeding? If say, a cow triggers an adjacent dispenser with wheat in it, it would feed the cow. (The same could be done with the breeding materials to their respective mobs.) This could help with automated animal farms, adding a new level of complexity.
An example of how you could work with this is by placing dispenser with pressure plate units inside your animal enclosure, and as they walk around, they would be fed. The downside is that this method of breeding would not yield experience.
The second idea is for dispensers to plant seeds/plants when farmland is nearby. Also for automated farming.
(A mechanic that could be used to balance this, is to reward XP for farming. And if you use automated farming, then you would not earn XP. This would be similar to the automated breeding.)
I think that it is a sensible idea, and I would like to hear your opinions. Please suggest additions and use constructive criticism.
This is a very good idea but the planting seeds stuff is what i don't understand.
Does it just plant the block in front of them or all around them?
Other than that great idea and support!
Well, I have always wanted to automate everything, I thing many people do.
Up until these recent snapshots, wheat farming could not be fully automated! It used to only be semi-automated (you still had to replant seeds). With this suggestion, I would now never have to walk into my evil spy chicken farm again. A big bonus. Not to mention a very ambitious person could even hook up various breeding materials from other various farms to go into the breeding machine. There is so much that could be done. My only problem is that if an animal is already fed, making a dispenser try to feed it more will simply leave wheat on the ground. Although there are ways to work around this, like a five to ten minute timer, but just thought I would point it out. Otherwise, full support.

Sounds good.

Nah. We get a good amount of XP from ore, mobs, furnaces and breeding. It's pretty simple to make mob traps and exploit some blocks by placing them and mining them over and over, thus giving us infinite XP. We don't need to tack it on simple farming now.

Glad you like it to a point.
As for the XP, maybe it would be a lot less than other sources. But I see how that could still all happen with the overdone XP.
Thanks.

It would plant the seeds in an open farmland spot one block away from the front of the dispenser. Like where you would be standing if you wanted to get armor from a dispenser. I probably wasn't clear enough in the thread, sorry.
I am glad you like it though.

Hmmm. . . Maybe it wouldn't feed them if they have already been fed? The problem could be worked out somehow nonetheless though.
Thanks!
Just posted same idea about planting. So my support to you.
About breeding - it's more difficult, because you need to stop animal just before the dispencers - but animals like to walk around and stand just where you don't want them to stand. :-)

Yeah, mobs tend to do stuff like that, but I'm sure that there is something that could work.
