Has anyone else thought that using Silk touch to acquire a whole ore block then smelting it should perhaps be more efficient then straight mining instead of less? Heres my logic.
I equate Silk Touch to an advanced mining technique where in you extract the whole ore block undamaged instead of just hacking minerals free with brute force. Then smelting the whole ore block to remove the impurities I would think should have a net Benefit to the amount recieved instead of the current penalty or status quo.
Esprecially with the addition of Redstone Blocks coming in the Redstone Update I was thinking that Smelting a whole ore block should result in a solid block of Lapis or Redstone. Emerald, Diamond and Iron would be different of course as a solid block would almost certainly be OP to the extreme but perhaps smelting the ore block could give 2? I wouldnt think that smelting a whole coal block would have much benefit... maybe burn awhile longer as fuel?
This would make Silk Touch a strategically signifigant enchantment instead of the aestethic and creative enchantment i see it as now. Strategically the only major use i know of for silk touch is Cobwebs and thats mainly useful in SMP. I mostly play SSP which makes cobwebs more decorative then strategic.
I can see that but that is more of a stall/convienience thing. the silk touch isnt required in that way just more "ease of access" as opposed to leaving the ore where you find it. I think what im driving for most is the improvement to redstone and lapis efficiency. it really bothers me that in those cases your actually penalized for smelting the ore block as opposed to mining it.
Who in there right mind uses Silk Touch just to end up smelting it? ._. That's just an overall waste of time, supplies, and a rare enchantment.
Thats sort of my point. Its an entire function of the game which is technically useless. This change would make the smelting of whole ore blocks actually have a use.
