I think I can explain this fairly quickly even though the topic is self-explanatory. For a long time lava mechanics have always been weird to me, but it's starting to just be silly since water is fairly reliable and controllable now. I would imagine they would have close to similar flows since they are both basically liquids.
Here is my quick video on the main issue with lava:
Basically, lava comes down in a wall formation, the source is cut off, and it pretty much just floats in the air forever. It just looks silly. The best way for me to safely remove something like this, without making a lot of krazy piston stuff, is to cover it up completely with blocks, then cut out the blocks.
