So we all know that there has been much debate for a long time now about new uses for obsidian. Many people want to see new armor and tools and stuff, but why not make something a little closer to an original idea. Now its true that obsidian already makes cool things like nether portals, ender chests, beacons, and enchanting tables, but considering obsidian's apparent magical properties, maybe it could be used to make a new weapon. What I had in mind is a staff that can fire projectiles like a bow, but with a twist. The "ammo" that it uses could be your levels that you gain. Where the bow has 3 levels of charged shots (weak, medium, and fully drawn respectively), the staff could have the same thing, but it takes 1 of your levels for each stage of charging, so a weak shot takes 1 level, a medium shot takes 2, and a fully charged shot takes 3. This could make it a nice alternative for those players who would like to be a more mage-like character instead of a soldier- or knight-like one. For balancing purposes, we could say that maybe hitting something with it does as much damage as a gold sword, so iron and diamond swords are still better, but its more useful than wood or stone, and that unlike a bow and arrow, if you miss your target, you cannot retrieve the shot, but you would only have to carry it instead of carrying a sword, a bow, and a bunch of arrows, thus freeing up some space in your inventory. Here is an idea of how it could be crafted:
[e] [E] [e]
[e] [O] [e]
[e] [O] [e]
O = obsidian
E = emerald
e = empty
In a lot of fictional settings, we usually see some type of gem as a topper for any mages staff, so I thought to put an emerald as the topper. This would also give emerald more use, plus, personally, I think a black glossy staff with a green crystal type tip would be pretty righteous. Whatchya think?
Why does your title say 'Cool new weapon idea'? Some people may think it's not cool.
Well then that would be their opinion, now wouldn't it? My opinion is that it is cool. Seems pretty obvious to me why it says "Cool new weapon idea". Now can we please stay on topic? Thank you.
Not worth it to waste 3 levels on something weaker than a gold sword. I mean , you could enchant a sword and get sharpness and it would be 300% better.. No support.

A reminder, the levels are for ranged attacks, and even then a 3 level cost was only for the strongest charge, and the cost of levels WAS A SUGGESTION. The point of this topic is to debate what would make this a balanced item. Maybe it could cost an amount of experience rather than full levels. And it clearly says it could be as strong as a gold sword, not weaker than a gold sword. Plus, did I ever say that it can't be enchanted? Also, by hitting something with it doing as much damage as a gold sword, you realize I meant a physical up close clobbering and not the damage of the ranged attacks, right? The ranged attack damage is another thing that I am seeking ideas for, so if you please, ideas. Thank you.

Naaaaaaaaah............. Way too complex for armor or weapons for Minecraft. :'P
Try maybe new block ideas with obsidian maybe? [<- Omg I just came up with an awesome idea.]
I still support but using that much levels is, underpowered. Instead use a percentage of a level and make it so then it could be rapidfire, 1 orb for each shot. It would hit around about 3 hearts and it travels in a straight line. Then there is a Mining mod where you can shoot it and it breaks 15 blocks before it dissapears. The downside is that you have to use 10 exp orbs. It cannot break obsidian though and all blocks and ores drop on you head like a silk touch. Using an emerald is a bit expensive, make it an enchanted diamond which all you need to do is enchant a diamond. No matter what level you spend the enchantment will always be the same. It will go 'shiny' like everything enchanted but has no other effect other than it saying 'Enchanted!' in the description.

I think "cool" should be removed from the thread title. We've already gotten suggestions such as magic wands or elemental staffs, and Minecraft isn't really much of a knight/mage/staff kind of game. We're already able to shoot fiery arrows with a Flare enchantment on bows. It doesn't have much of a good reason to exist in Minecraft other than to just be a "new weapon". Sorry, no support.
Read this. And see why you should not say COOL weapon idea.
I read it, and your logic is flawed. See, I am an adult, and that means I'm not gonna go and rage on people for not liking my idea that I believe is "cool". The fact that you, however, are making such a big deal out of it is the reason that guideline is in place. Also, I can say whether something is cool or not because that is my opinion. Who's to say I can't have one? I believe you, in fact, may be a pretty cool person in person, but then according to your logic, I can't say that now can I?

You are right, minecraft is not a knight/mage/staff kind of game. It's a sandbox. Where anything can be possible. Let me ask you this: Do you know what is the biggest asset for minecraft? Variety. Options. The ability for anyone to be what they want to be. See THAT is the key here. They come up with updates all the time, adding lots of new things that I'm sure many people didn't want, but there they are anyways. I have been playing since early Beta, and boy did they come up with some really cool stuff along the way as I am sure you are aware of, and honestly, I would love to see more. But if you are content with what you have in your minecraft, that's fine, but I want more. I respect your decision, however, and thank you for your input.

Mistake #1. Whether you want to accept this truth or not, your own opinion on your own suggestion is the least valued. Well yeah, of course you think your idea is "cool", otherwise you wouldn't post it. However, the sole reason that you posted it was to get others' opinions on it. When a person keeps mentioning how much they like their own idea, it means nothing. When others mention how awesome it is, then it matters.

Variety is good, but that doesn't mean we can throw any old idea right in the game. Minecraft still retains its own unique theme, and not every idea in the world will fit in.

We'd all love to see more. But when Mojang gives us an update, they have to make sure the new features are balance, original, interesting and that they don't butcher another thing already in the game. This is why we don't have oversuggested garbage like a thirst bar, a bunch of more pointless ores or obsidian tools.
But if you are content with what you have in your minecraft, that's fine, but I want more. I respect your decision, however, and thank you for your input.
Well, you wanting more doesn't boost your suggestions. You have to explain why the rest of the world should value your idea, and not base it off of just what you want.
Your staff idea isn't the worst, but it's not exactly vanilla-Minecraft worthy. We already have enchantments to give us flaming arrows. We can already light mobs on fire with ease, so it could be argued that your staff is overpowered.
