I think minecraft should have bigger LAN ranges. I know LAN stands for local area network but I have read many posts and it says the farthest you can go is inside your house. I have a friend not that far away from my house and she is new so I want to help her but the LAN is too small. I live either 30 or 45 minutes away but still. I don't want to mess around with making a server because it keeps messing up my computer. I tried to download the one off the minecraft site but she wasn't alb to join so I deleted it. It would be nice to have a small party. I think minecraft should also think of just making an online server like for the X-box but I know there are servers already but you can make either a closed or open party where you and your friends wont have any disruption from anyone else trying to join and if you put it on open then people join as they will. Just think about it minecraft and it might do you good in the future.
You cannot make LAN go 30 or 45 minutes away. LAN is for people in the range, that are able to enter your internet, to use. The Xbox uses Xbox Live, Computers are different than that.
What we have here is a complete breakdown in understanding how LAN works.
So to start off. jpmrocks, LAN stands for Local Area Network. just for future reference.
Now OP. You can not 'increase the range' of LAN, however you can set up a virtual LAN using Himachi or other such services which will essential 'trick' the computer into thinking that you are in a LAN with the other people on the Himachi network. So if your goal is to play with some one who isn't on the same network as you use Himachi or setup a server. Also as for Mojang setting up an XBox live like system thats not going to happen. Because they would have to pay all of those servers, and pay for maintenance and also for the bandwidth to allow all the traffic they would likely get. And considering I don't believe Mojang even hosts the servers that have the minecraft.net accounts on them I don't see them setting up dedicated servers for people to set up personal worlds on.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
A basic definition of a LAN would be any group of connections which are all on the same side of a modem (that's what the "local" refers to). If any part of the connection between you and her goes through a modem, it's not part of the same LAN. You'll either have to use the internet-connection options already present (set up a server) or use the fake LAN system mentioned above.
Guys, EVERYONE is on the same Internet. Not everyone is on the same LAN. It hurts my technical ears (eyes) to read some of these comments...
I have a solution to your problem. If you want to let your friends join, you have to port forward port 25565 TCP/UDP to your computer's LOCAL IP address. Sadly, I can't tell you how to do this because it differs by router, but try going to 192.168.1.1 and poking around in your router's settings. Then give your friend your PUBLIC IP address.
However, it seems that Mojang may be adding easy, built-in server features in the near future, so hold tight!
No. No matter what, you MUST port forward to make this work. What Mojang can do is make Minecraft do the port-mapping for you, but this won't work for all routers and might be hard or impossible to do with Java alone.
LAN(Local Area Network) refers to the connections between a group of computers in a limited area. In this case it would most likely be the computers in your home. What you are suggesting is not possible.
To play with your friend you would have to set up a server.
