This is only something I've roughly gone over in my mind, but wouldn't it be interesting to have a world tree biome? I don't know that the coding is even feasible, but I thought I'd suggest it anyway.
A biome that's always about average size, grassland base, and is nothing but one giant tree? A trunk as big as any mountain, with branches that spread out across the entire biome? It could even be the first tree to have "roots" in the game, that lead down into the dirt and stone using similar placement algorithms as for the branches. It could have its own cave systems and whatnot, internal and external waterfalls.
Admittedly though, the world's height isn't much to work with...so it may have to be a "valley" biome, where the base height in that area is significantly reduced...maybe 40 instead of 64. In "Large Biome" setting, it could just be a bigger valley with the same size tree.
Perhaps things could be adjusted so that a new type of NPC village can potentially spawn in the branches or in or around the trunk. I'd also suggest that it be a "guaranteed" biome, such that there is always one, but only one, in any given world.
Isn't Yggdrasil from an anime which uses giant trees to travel through dimensions? Anywho, I dont think this huge trees should be large enough for one biome, unless the biome is small.
You say biome sized tree and my first thought is: 'If I cut that thing down I would never need wood again.' But yah I don't think this would really work out also I believe there is a Biome suggestions mega thread around the suggestions section somewhere. So I would re post your idea there because this may very well get locked soon for redundancy. But you never know.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.

Yggdrasil is actually a tree from Scandinavian mythology. it is the world tree
Or if your familiar with Dragon Quest IX: Sentenels of the Starry Skies Yggdrasil was the World Tree for the Celestrians who gathered Benevolesence to allow it to bear fruit called the Fyggs (the plot mcguffins of that game...)
I'm also surprised so many are against this. I would love to come across a gigantic tree in my travels. I think it would be an awesome (as in, awe-inspiring) thing to find. I don't much care for the npc idea though.
Would it be a new type of wood, or just a really really big oak tree?

The biggest problem with it is that we are talking about, or at least the suggestion is, that is a new biome unto it self. Think about that. an entire biome, whose only feature is a single tree. Also, how would this scale between normal and large biome maps?

So...too far out?
It would work much better as an optional mod.... perhaps you should pop over to the modding section and put in a request?

It isn't mainstream reaction. I gigantic biome consisting of one gigantic tree is out of place for natural Minecraft generation.
