Do people use beacons?
This may be dumb question, but I haven't seen a practical use for them either than the recent Minecraft basketball court. I find that creating the beacon in survival is way too difficult to create and is just not worthwhile for what it is. The Wither seems way too overpowered and I don't really want to create a pyramid of valuable blocks to just create a small power-up boost. Power-ups could be made much easier and less expensive with enchantments or potions. I find that in it's current form the Beacon is one of those blocks that Minecraft doesn't really need, it almost seems like they've run out of ideas.
One thing I really do like is the aesthetic appeal of the Beacons and the possibilities of the block.
What I'd like to see is using the Beacon, more like a Beacon. I'd like to see them used as tools for navigation.
I'd like to see Beacons become used as landmarks with markers on the map that show the location of the Beacons. It'd be nice to see something to replace the Nether Star ingredient, but this rarity could prevent people from setting up too many markers. I would not want the Beacons to require a pyramid of Iron/Gold/Diamond/Emerald blocks underneath it either, but maybe a Redstone source of power?
I'd also like to see placing different dyes inside the Beacon block to change the colour of the beam it will emit and to also be able to change the name of the Beacon so that what you call it also appears on the map.
I think this use of the Beacon block suits it's name much better.
If you decided to not name a Beacon, only the symbol could just appear. (It could be annoying if empty text boxes appeared, especially if two or more Beacons were placed close for visual purposes.)

Beacons on Maps
I think this use of the Beacon would accommodate well to all Survival, Creative and Adventure maps.
Perhaps the current use of the Beacon could have another block created for it so that it doesn't feel like Mojang is removing features.
Have you FOUGHT the Wither? Believe me. It is over-exaggerated. I remember fighting it so unprepared...and won
Protection 1 full diamond armor (sorry...even I fell for the exaggeration)
Unenchanted bow (Now about the rest, I forgot about the exaggeration. I know... *facepalm*)
Only one stack of arrows
Sharpness I Diamond Sword
Swiftness Potion
Regeneration Potion
Believe me... I used up my arrows and it has not yet made halfway so what I did? I ran around picking up the arrows that missed with the Wither shooting at me. He was weak (with my diamond armor) and I was withering.
The only thing is, it takes TOO LONG to get the heads. The chances should be increased even by just 5%
I do disagree that beacons aren't used much because believe me beacons are used a lot on my server even though it's radius of power doesn't reach far. However, this idea of giving the beacon another use as a marker seems very good :-D

Though I love the idea of map markers by the way
I beat it with full iron armor, an iron sword, and a few buckets of milk... I built it underground in the End, and tunneled away. I hit it repeatedly when it was trying to smash it's way towards me, until it died.
On topic, I like the suggestion, but I think the map's icon should be a dot, and not a tag. Colored beacons are cool too.
I don't like the tags idea. It should just be a marker with a beacon sign. I think most people can remember easily which of their bases are where on a map.
I think that the beacon should fire the light beam if only one ore block is under it, but not give boosts until the first, second and third pyramids. In other words, I'm not particularly fond of the redstone-powered idea.
Otherwise, bravo! Colored marking beacons! This would actually go well with colored glass, now that I think about it.
I like the additional uses you came up with but not removing what is already there. Just add the mapping, nameing, and coloring options and make those available with out teh pyramid. I would like it if the range of the beacons were increased. Some bases are huge and it would be nice if the effects could cover all of it.
I'd like this a lot, appropriating the beacon texture for use as an actual beacon, maybe with the nether star being replaced with a diamond block or the like.
As for the actual beacon, it should include endstone in it's ingredients and look like one of the endercrystals that the dragon has, and be much much more powerful than what we currently have.
