I know that Mojang is hoping to expand The Nether with their recently created quartz blocks and the newish Wither boss, but one thing that always bugged me was that when I placed torches or iron bars, they do not fit the hell-like atmosphere at all.
Instead of creating a gigantic amount of Nether counterparts for all the Overworld blocks, what I think Mojang could do is have the blocks change colour or even have slightly different textures, much like in different Biomes.
I think that a lot of the Overworld blocks would look much better in The Nether if they were at least slightly tinted red, just so the lighting would match. A sort of cheesy idea would be to make the grass block have red grass instead of green, but this could ruin someone having a hidden paradise inside The Nether... but it would be really cool to see some black, Wither-themed vines.
The Nether is meant to have it's own blocks for a reason, they fit the hellish atmosphere in the Nether. They shouldn't create Nether counter-parts or re-texture the blocks from the Overworld. It would ruin the unique aspect of the blocks in the Nether. The two worlds should remain completely separate.

I don't think he's suggesting that the blocks in the Nether should be replaced with re-textured over-world blocks... I think he's suggesting that any over-world blocks brought to the Nether would appear differently when placed there.
No Support, it is unneeded and would take up even more space. People also use grass and vines, even though they are dried out, to add variety to the otherwise red abyss.

While I agree that it's unnecessary, the same thing could be said for most of the new crap they have been adding.
As for taking up more space, for many blocks, it wouldn't take up any additional space. The code to change colors of blocks like vines and grass based on biome already exists, and the nether is already considered its own biome. All they would need to do is change the colors that are currently assigned to grass, vines, leaves, etc. from their current nether colors to something more hell-like.
Actual re-textures would be a bit more work, and take up some space, granted.

My criticism is OVER 9000!! Oh, and by the way, ¡llum¡π@t¡ ©oπf¡rmed o3o
The Nether affecting the overworld blocks appearance because it's hell, so only the texture of the overworld blocks will change and nothing else.
