So I was thinking with the new patch coming up with the hopper, and all the many things that could be done using the hopper. Well I have brought to pass another idea that could possibly just work. Imagine putting an item frame on a hopper, and the item that is in the frame would be the only item that could go through the hopper, allowing you to easily throw items in a stream of water and have it automatically sort out for you. This would be great for a series of automatic farms, (mob, cactus, wheat, ect) and they all lead up to the same stream of water and the items gained from the farms would miraculously be sorted in their own individual chests.
Also, as other people have stated about this idea, that they could just add a slot in the hopper (filter slot) where you put an item in that slot that would be filtered, allowing only that item through the hopper. Or by creating a separate hopper by crafting a hopper and an item frame to add the filter slot to the hopper.
I believe this would be an exciting addition to the hoppers coming out in the next patch.
The only problem with this is that while the Item Frame is technically an entity when placed on the wall, it is an entirely different entity when it is broken and on the ground as an item. These "item" entities have mostly the same limitations as Blocks and can only hold so much data. That being said, I have no idea if it could simply use it's extra data to hold the item. It could be possible, but I still think a Filter slot on a Hopper would be a lot easier to code and implement.

Good job, better sorting method than anyone has come up with so far!
(At least I don't think so)
