I never mentioned I wanted it to be like spore, some of the commenters might have but I don't think custom models would be very good.
Wait, what?!
So, what exactly is the point of this mob maker if there are no custom models for mobs? I was imagining something that could let you make creatures such as the ones in Mo'Creatures.
I'm not gonna support something that just lets you make a million skin and damage edits of the >15 default mobs.
You don't appear to know what a custom mob is made of, and how it has to be integrated into a game.
Custom mob models include:
-Mesh data
-Armature information
-Mesh deformation (vertex skinning) data (applying vertices to the armatures for correct mesh deformation)
-Various Animation data
-UV Face mapping data (for applying textures with the correct rotation)
There are MANY 3D formats from various 3D programs (Blender, 3DsMax, Maya, etc..), they would need to have a special converter for each format that would convert them into files that can be read by Minecraft, or Minecraft could be coded to read each format. The former idea seems easier.
well i have blender, what can minecraft read? i can export different file types. (i've been wanting to do this kind of thing after i saw this forum...)

No, I don't know what a custom mob is made of. However, I think it should at least support OTHER people's custom models, that have already been perfected. (like, what if you want to make an explosive purple lion?)

All of the current mobs are hard coded in. There is no 3D model file. Notch did not model them in a 3D program with editing tools. He typed in their vertex coordinates in code
etc...
this [not real] code by itself would just make a straight line.
(i dont know how the code looks, but that's an idea of what it might look like)
If people could model the mobs and use a script to convert them to the java code, there would need to be a proper API to read the code files and import the mob models into the mob creator to be further customized. It could be done, but it seems too technical for some people to bother with. Don't get me wrong, it would be a neat idea, but it's a few steps ahead of the mob creator and API together.
If this was implemented, I would be quite excited. I (and my brother) are trying to construct mobs for some interesting themed worlds, and this would provide just what we need.

I think we should be able to make our own shapes, but have each block we add be classified as arm block, leg block, hand block, body block, head block and tail block. It would be funny if someone made an arm out of tail blocks. And maybe a "generate template button" because if we change the shape, we change the template.
I think an ingame option like the way textures are implemented. Maybe some way that mob's models, textures, sounds, animations, etc. were combined into one file (Ex: Creeper.mob) so that people could share, download, create, or just use in their own game. Maybe in a (better) GUI of the server client, an option to add, remove, or disable Mobs. Only admins could change it, so there is no hyper griefing ( that spawn in groups of 5 that explode on contact with or ).

I actually made a thread a lot like this. It was based on creating a mob's shape out of blocks, like minecraft itself, then colouring it. It would just be for presenting and testing ideas, not for actually adding the abilities and features for adding it to the game. Wait a minute, I'll find the link...
EDIT: Oh, and the majority of votes on that thread I made say I should be given $1,000,000. Are there any millionaires out there that can give me some moneyz?

I can't stop playing Destiny. Someone raid with me damn it.
I would not like this, but yet I would. Having it be like spore would be a disaster. You would have mobs shaped like anything possible, some would be great but others... well, you know. Some would be overpowered, some would be underpowered. It would be preferable to have some kind of option-menu where you can pick what mobs you want, and it would download them from the master server (in this case Minecraft.net).
Another thing that would ruin the game for me (kinda) would be that to get any kind of mob you would just have to hit the button. To me it feels like it wouldn't be as much of a novelty to hit a button to download a mob then to get, say, Mo' Creatures in which a lot of work went into.
It wouldnt be much like spore without custom models, nor would it diminish people who put effort into custom models, such as the mo creatures mod, or bunnies.
Wait, what?!

The way I figure it is that there would be a template for each mob already out, yet I'm sure modders would create other templates that you could use on it anyways. I'm not sure it's even possible to create something with a custom template, unleass every possible design is ccoded in.
This is a fantabulastic idea! See, its so great an idea I made up a word for it! Fantabulastic! =D

I have an idea with how to make the monsters so you couldnt make something with 1 health that drops diamonds, redstone, and obsidan. What it would be like is there is a ability points system so you start with 10 points
Points: 10
Hp: 2
Drops: Dirt
Now if i make it drop apples this happens
Points: 5
Hp: 2
Drops: Apples
Now if i add hp i get points
Points: 6
Hp: 5
Drops: Apples
Same if i take away hp, however at only one hp, you have a max of 3 points.
