Before I get to the idea, I want to apologize to Notch.
I'm quite sure that Notch does not remember the incident to which I refer, but since I was the one in the wrong, it remains my responsibility to make the apology, remembered or not.
If you are reading this: Yes, I'm the same Krelos from Wurm who acted like a total A-Hole to you when you completely did not deserve it. For that I am very sorry. If you can forgive me I can promise that my douche-like past will stay there in the past, well actually, it will even if you wont forgive me. But all the same, I hope that you won't think of me as poorly as you probably have since then, in the few sparse moments you might have remembered me at all.
In the likely event that you don't remember me or what I'm talking about, suffice to say that I was once a jerk to you and you had every right to ban me outright but did not, which pretty much proved wrong the things I thought about you. Sorry for thinking them in the first place.
I simply hope that when, if ever, I come to your mind in the future, it is not with a negative thought.
Now, on to the idea.
The MC Mob Maker would probably be a 3rd party program like Omen and NBT, but would instead allow people to use custom mob models and plug in whatever abilities and behaviors they wanted.
What this would (probably) require from Notch would be to build the mob library in such a way that the program would be able to pull information from it and plug in new entries, so each server could in theory have its own custom mobs.
I guess that's the extent of the idea.
It would (in my imagination) let us make our own models and pick from a few different preexisting walking methods/animations or maybe even put in new ones, pick when it spawned, how it acted (aggressive, passive, passive in daylight, etc.) what it could do (shoot arrows, explode, walk on water, fire-immune, etc.) and what it dropped on death (anything from arrows to stupid things like water cubes)
Hopefully it would let us combine all these things in any way the user wanted, so as to allow creatures that both shot arrows and exploded and dropped multiple items types if so desired.
If this could be done then it would open the game up to a lot of creative possibilities that, at the moment, require Notch's direct attention and time.
Imagine a library of people's creatures with all the details listed where you can grab what you want and just plug it in to your server. Where Notch could go and browse to find the best of the best and include them in the 'vanilla' version for everyone to use.
Sure there would be a ton of terrible things made, but there would also be a ton of fantastic things made.
Yeah, this does sound like SporeCC for MC now that you mention it, but that doesn't seem like a bad thing.

Yeah, it's a good idea. I suggested it a LOOOOOOONNNNGGGGG time ago. (roughly 4 months) http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8545
Mine was less of a developed suggestion. XD
I'm glad someone else is crusading for this. When I suggested it, I was promptly snubbed by Timst. XD

Defend your words flexibly.
Change your words fittingly.
Let prejudice, popular opinion, and preconception be free from your judgments.
I feel like a mob creation tool that lets you pick and choose abilities would result in a lot of mobs that might look different, but would all act mostly the same.
Notch has said that his approach to mobs involves giving each one its own unique attributes. It captures that retro feel of the games where every monster had a different behavior. If you have everyone using this mob maker, a ton of monsters will all have the same behavior. Not to mention joining a server and having no idea why this spider can fly and duplicate when you hit it.
Something tells me you'd have a hard time getting Notch to add support for custom mobs. It might be third-party, but the game still has to allow for it. Who knows, though. He might think it's a better idea than I do. v0_ov
Yeah, the downside of this would be the amount of stupid cookie-cutter creatures made.
But the upside would be that you can control what your server has, or play on servers that have things you like.
I'd expect that there would be a few people who would become known for making really good things, and then everyone would end up using them.
But yeah, it's up to Notch.

This is a great idea. I'm afraid the programming might be tough, but if it's do-able then I think it would be an awesome addition to Minecraft, it would really add some diversity. Just imagine, a cockmongler monster. You'd be crafting at the work bench and it would pop up with this giant smiling face right at the window in front of you and explode. That would be the opposite of creepers, because they frown.
Btw, takes a lot of guts to apologise (even online), you did the right thing, krelos.
i like this idea, it has a lot of potential, and it gives me one more hack engine to play with.
...
then again, its not really a hack if notch implemented it.

What? So when pigs get hit by lighting, they suddenly develop into bipeds and receive brown leather skirts and golden swords from nowhere?
i would make a mob that could destroy blocks(but blocks like stone would take MUCH longer)
it would be a flat long snake-like mob but it could not jump(but it could dig)
it would drop 3 upon defeat. And rarely it would drop 1 instead
notch if your listening MAKE THIS!

You seem new here. If the last post in a thread was from a month or longer ago, than don't post. Posting will be a necro-post.
A perfect idea.I used the skin editor for a good hour making one skin when I first downloaded this, and if this ever becomes true,I'll spend 5 hours on this.
There should also be a choice to customize the skin, size(by blocks and half-blocks) and details(like the horns on the cow).
Just one question is that what will the interface be like?
Will there be sliders or button or both?
Will there be a palette under a "preview(from SkinEdit)" or on the other side of the screen?
forum rules never really specified how long it takes for a thread to die. but then again it's not too good to shove great ideas under the carpet just for how old they are.
back onto the topic, a Mob Designer is still a cool idea. put a mob together visual wise, then give it certain properties like being able to fly, how fast it can move, if it drowns under water, underwater movement speed, if it can break blocks or use utilities placed by the player(s) (ladders, doors). just adding ideas. it'd be nice if we got a visual representation of this... in fact i might make something like this for show
I'll be happy when the BBCode is working, I'd really like to post a preview image so people get an idea what it is before they go clicking dull and unattractive links.

Looks pretty nice! Agh! I really wish someone would code this, or notch could..... hopefully if it ever gets implemented, its not TOO easy.... or else we'll have another disaster like spore.... A lot of crap made by very little kids, and some beutiful work by the more experienced.

the library would most likely have to be made by notch, if not then have to be made by a highly experienced web designer probably working for notch. minecraft users could sign up like they do here and fill in a "minecraft username" box so we'd know who they are in-game. off of that, groups would have to be created where members could join and collaborate their creations.
users could receive higher ranks depending on the rating given to their creations, and groups could be moderated to allow only experienced users who create good things in and to keep the 10 year olds and lousy creations out
Although all designs would have to be built to like 2 maybe 3 templates.
1.2 blocks tall e.g. skeletons and zombies
2. 2 blocks wide e.g spider
3. floating (possibly) e.g. ghast
i like the idea though :smile.gif:
