Looking for a shield thread, found this one, blah blah blah . . .
All of this sword+shield combo business is just nonsensical and overcomplicated. What if I want to use my shield without my sword? Just add a shield slot near your armor slots. Shields will only absorb damage when you "use" them by sneaking [Lshift] and when they do block they absorb all of the damage that would have been dealt. Using the shield would also cut the knockback to about 1/3 of what it would have been. However, when you use an item to attack while sneaking, it disables the shield while that item is in use. This prevents people from holding down left-click while also blocking all attacks. There should also be a short moment for the shield to be temporarily disabled whenever it blocks an attack.
Picture this: you're out mining or building something and you've dumped your armor so you won't waste durability on small falls, but suddenly you're attacked by a skeleton. Fortunately, you've got a shield equipped, so you block attacks as you get your sword out. Then you systematically advance on the skeleton until you get close enough to kill it.
For crafting, I kinda like the recipes that GreyAcumen provides, but I think that there should only be one type of shield for the sake of simplicity. The classic armor ingredients should remain, but leather should be replaced with wood in the case of shields, since it makes a bit more sense. I'm not sure about the whole fire damage thing in regards to wood shields. It makes sense, but it might be a bit silly. Meh, I could go either way on that.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Don't pick your nose with a pickaxe. Use a shovel.
we talk about this on godcraft's forum for shields in a PvP server - not having it is just a mass fest of sword swings and arrow shooting. Also bows should have a small reload speed (ie: having stamina bar or just a Cooldown).
just my 2 cents but this topic should be really be considered.
I got this far in my shield post. Please add if you'd like.
Anyway how bout implementing shields and blocking? Press ctrl to block. Blocking reduces damage greatly. Obviously the better shield the better resistance. You move slower while blocking. You cannot attack while blocking. If someone hits you while you are blocking, their sword is damaged and there is a small chance that they will lose balance and miss an attack (Let's say if while holding mouse down, you attack once every sec. You would miss one attack and there would be a two sec delay) Ideas?

Alright, so this is how I picture blocking working. There would be two different types of blocking, shield blocks and parries.
Shield Blocks
If you have a shield equipped in your shield slot, when you take out your sword, a shield will appear in your other hand. If you right click with your shield out you will pull your shield up in front of you, and block all attacks coming at you. You take zero damage from any attacks that hit the shield, however, shields can only take so many hits before they break (the better the material, the more hits they can take), you can only block attacks that are coming from your front- if someone attacks you in the back while you have your shield out it doesn't protect you, using your shield (holding right click) makes you move 50% slower, and you can't attack while holding your shield up.
Parries
Parries can be executed by right clicking with the sword, stick, axe, shovel, or pickaxe out. (If you have a shield equipped, this obviously doesn't work for swords.) If you parry right after someone starts swinging their weapon, but before it hits you, you'll block the attack with the side of your tool, stunning them for a brief period. (allowing you to attack, while they're completely defenseless.) However, the parry action has a cool down that is slightly longer than a sword swing, so you can't just mash right click.
I don't really like that idea. It's a good idea, but just not for Minecraft (especially singleplayer)
First off I disagree with the crafting implication, it should be more like this
= Material of Shield = Blank
And also I belive that the shields could have two different ways to be used
1. Passive
Adds a chance to negate an attack, like for wood = 5% chance to block.
And everytime you get hit it takes away durability. It will have a slightly higher chance
to block projectiles from hitting than melee, say 10% for wood. Will have a equip slot.
2.Secondary Action
Have a block button to hold which blocks all incoming attacks infront of you, decreasing
in durability as it gets hit. Higher durability for higher Tier. Will have a equip slot.
While in use you are immobile. You cannot attack while blocking. Can only be used while
sword is equipped, Right Click.
Shields will not protect against Explosions and Wooden shields burn to nothing if player catches fire. Fall damage and drowining will not be protected by a shield... Etc.

My idea is "auto block" no button to press or anything.
Not to worry, your answers lies within the link.
