What about mobs differing aesthetically depending on the environment, but doing the same things? For example, cows would no longer spawn in the Arctic or Tundra--something like Yaks would. When killed, they would drop leather and steak, just like cows, and they could be milked and bred and whatnot, just like cows. Same applies for other mobs; they'd have some variability depending on the environment. In general, really, it might be pretty nice to get more variability between biomes, to make each more unique in its challenges, advantages, and resources (Jungles already have cats, Extreme Hills have Emeralds, Grasslands have Villages, etc.) I guess this is a suggestion based on Minecraft's inadequacies in reflecting the real world--domesticated livestock probably shouldn't be spawning in the wild at all--and such inadequacies really do not detract from the game at all; rather, they make it unique, but I do like yaks...
That means nearly no passive mobs would spawn in the desert... except for wolves?
From what I know, passive mobs don't spawn in the desert already, and wolves are neutral I think...
On topic: The idea doesn't really seem necessary... I guess it would be a change, but I prefer killing my cattle biome regardless rather than butchering yaks. No support.

That removes the fact that Minecraft is not about diversity, but about the unique uses about everything.
-cows are the only mob to drop leather
-creepers are the only mobs that can be powered by lightning
And so on...
And plus, arent cows the overworld animals in-game which have the thickest hide? If anything, they should be more common in the cold biomes compared to the other animals

Yes, and IRL, cows hide are thicker then a yak's. Yaks have more wool to keep in warmth in arctic environments. Cows have thinker hides to retain coolness, which is needed in vast plains.
OT: I think this would take away uniqueness of certain mobs, and take away a bit of the cartooneyness of MC. No support.
redekens and LoneWolfe: Ya, I'm not sure, but I don't think anything spawns in Deserts now, I can't find any pigs in my Tundra, and I don't think anything spawns in the Arctic. Rex, jpmrocks, and really everyone: Good points, but we already have different trees depending on biome, as well as different grass colors; certain structures, such as mountains, can only generate in select biomes (I believe); Mushroom Islands are an extreme example of biome diversity; cats come in three or so different colors without any functional variation, etc. (leather armor...) Also, the fact that certain mobs don't spawn in certain environments means that Mojang is paying attention to their ability to survive in said environments, so it would make sense to turn them into mobs that would actually be able to survive there, rather than close equivalents. It might be unusual for veteran players, but for newer players it might bring something extra to the game, and it would make exploring the world more enjoyable for everyone. It also might allow the spawn of a few types of mobs in currently empty environments--peccaries, I think they're called, could spawn rarely in deserts, for example (even though they aren't actually that closely related to pigs...). jpmrocks, thank you, I did not know that (yak info). Know you anything else that might set yaks apart from cows that might vary gameplay? I titled this with "functionally-redundant," but a small or medium variation 'twixt the spawns in different biomes might be nice. Lastly, does anyone know how I might divide my text into paragraphs? It would make it much easier to read all this...
I don't know if I like the examples you displayed, but the concept I support.
The main two were the trees and cats; the trees are pretty much exactly what I'm talking about, but plants, and the cats are an example of a mob that has various skins without behaving differently; the rest was mainly support stuff that was more weakly linked to the point--perhaps shouldn't have put them in there, but maybe different examples will make better sense to different people. Anyway, thanks for the support!
