I don't really see a use of this if it only keeps mobs in a certain spot. You have to keep these factors in mind:
Mobs despawn if you are more than 128 blocks away from them
General mob traps usually conceal the mobs in a small area, making it easy to retrieve loot/kill them
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea and the fact that slime balls will have a broader use, but this would really only help in situations that involve trapping other players.

You have valid points, but here's something to consider; perimeter trap. A one-block wide perimeter of Slime Blocks out side your house. If you have hostile monsters on your tail, jump over the perimeter. The mobs won't do the same and will be trapped until you decide to kill them(or the sun comes up if they're a zombie or skeleton). It's also useful in mob grinders as they allow a wider area for more mob collection in a given area. I could whip up a screenshot, but instead I'll explain it.
Lets say you want to make a mob grinder using a dungeon spawner, but you want a bigger floor than one block so there's more room for them to spawn and drop into your trap. However, THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM. Mobs will walk around and possibly shoot you from the back. Water isn't completely reliable for moving them into a single spot; there will always be that one skeleton that's in the corner source block. The solution? A slime block floor. They trap mobs. Combine it with water(which would not move the mobs themselves, lemme add that to the OP)to move the items into a single spot that is out of the way of the hostiles, and you have a good mob and exp grinder!
Great idea slimeballs just suck right now for uses. We could really use something like this. Full Support!
Also would the slime blocks be affected by gravity and maybe, this is just an idea but could they attract slimes or possibly make slimes spawn there where you put the slime block? I don't know just my idea but anyway Full Support great idea.

Nah. Them being affected by gravity would be sorta useless.
Also, slime spawning on top of them would make a perimeter line of slime blocks very dangerous and annoying.
I'd like to thank you all for how kind you've been in this thread! In fact, the ONE PERSON who criticized it having not many uses had very valid points. You don't see THAT on the Internet every day, do ya? XD
If anything, wouldn't the slime block allow mobs to speed through it, beacause it would be very slick, and act like ice.
Also, Your "greif trap" is actually a "troll".

Figures the moment I say that everyone has been very nice and smart on this thread, some guy comes in with a lack of regard for how Minecraft Slime works.
