It was odd to notice that this idea hadn't been suggested before, especially since it's being used so much. But what I want to suggest, are armour stands, weapon racks and Shelves. (You may notice some from this mod: http://www.minecraft...__hl__ risugami)
Now, what are those?
Armour stands and Shelves are storage items that display what is on them. If you put armour on an armour stand, it will display as a suit of armour as if a player it wears. You can also put a skin under it for fashion purposes, and to make things creepier, you can let the armour stand's head order to follow any player within a 10-blocks radius. Creepy!!!
Shelves are similair to the armour stands, which display what item is stored there. Shelves can contain 9 slots of storage, and even on stacks, 1 item of the same kind will have a sprite on the shelves.
Another new thing to add is a Weapons Rack. A weapons rack will display weapons, such as a bow, swords and tools, in the same way as the armour stand does. You can also make your own kind bottom ground by simply placing a block in a special Gui slot. Fancy having your own excalubir in a stone block?
Why would this be usefull? 2 reasons:
- Cosmetic. Nothing more awesome in an armoury are suits of armour, giving gold/chain armour at least some decorational use, or display your rarest items without that people have to open your chest (risk of stealing).
- Shops. Many servers have shops, and instead of putting a sign, you can also just SHOW the item in the chests. Even better, the chest (if the development desires so) can be replaced with the shelves.
Just use an item frame. I understand a shelf would be slightly different, but it isn't really a large enough difference to need an entirely new item for.

Support! I was thinking about something like this earlier, but with bones to literally build the skeleton! Imagine, a hallway lined with skeletons wearing your armor!! Of course, they would be blocks toat you could move around, not actual skeleton entity's!!
It was odd to notice that this idea hadn't been suggested before, Actually...It was. especially since it's being used so much. Yeah... But what I want to suggest, are armour stands, weapon racks and Shelves. (You may notice some from this mod: http://www.minecraft...__hl__ risugami)

Yes. Heads following? Not sure... And also, not sure if this is what you meant but, how about any head can be used?
Shelves are similair to the armour stands, which display what item is stored there. Shelves can contain 9 slots of storage, and even on stacks, 1 item of the same kind will have a sprite on the shelves. Interesting...But could be just one block. Also, I think I suggested this before. But for library purposes.
Please... Try using only one block.
Why would this be usefull? 2 reasons:
- Cosmetic. Nothing more awesome in an armoury are suits of armour, giving gold/chain armour at least some decorational use, or display your rarest items without that people have to open your chest (risk of stealing). Yes for aesthetics!!!
- Shops. Many servers have shops, and instead of putting a sign, you can also just SHOW the item in the chests. Even better, the chest (if the development desires so) can be replaced with the shelves. More aesthetics!!!
And how about, change it to one type of block only. The Stand block!
It is just like the size of a pressure plate first but right clicking will bring a gui. This gui has a bottom block panel where you put the block where everything else stands.
Then, above that is another panel. This is where you put your armor/weapon/item/head.
Then, if head is placed, you can still go up one more and place a headwear.
If it is Boots, you can go up three more times (You know why)
If it is a weapon, no.
Also, how about displaying whether the item is enchanted?
Appearently you take 'shelves' in a different meaning ;). If you've seen the mod, they are stair-like shelves with 9 item sprites, 3 on each row3.
The following heads is something you appear to not get as well, I recommend you test out the mod ;). What it does is it basicly models an invisible character (you can give a skin for it, player skin would be default where plugins can add the skin of a live player) which wears the armour. The head's direction (if toggled) follows you if you are close to it.
I will try and make some concept art of it.

You want to be a dragon? Well, then you need to have wings, a passion to hoard, and have a deadly breath.
Oh, and did I forgot to tell you dragons are extremely territorial? ROAWR >:)
Erasmo, shelves can hold 9 items, and yes it is implementable otherwise the mod wouldn't exist .
I never said it wouldn't be implementable, I just said it only adds superficial new things you can do with item displays, and thus isn't worth it for Mojang to add.
If you want to display the item in a chest? Item frames.
If you want to display your rarest item? Item frames.
If you want to "hang up" a suit of armor? Item frames.

Panfish, tags are not to help searching threads, tags are keywords that show relevance. And I've looked at this earlier, it yielded no result ;).
I wanted to be one of the cool kids.
With plugins people can make a real-player skin ^.^
Support. Add me to the list.
