I was thinking to myself yesterday about how you could make underwater projects easier, and I thought "why not have helmets?"
I realize that there is aquafinity, but you need obsidian to make an enchantment table, which is gotten very much farther in the game. This is meant to be earlier on.
You would make a hollow square to craft the glass helmet, but it could be reinforced by putting gold, iron or diamond in the middle. Since it is easier to get than a helmet with aquafinity, there would be certain disadvantages.
When underwater, the helmet loses durability. If reinforced, it will last longer. It also decreases your vision, but in water it stays the same. When it runs out of durability, it shatters, and you have a full air bar.
If this idea is ever implemented, you could add a system where it takes more damage the lower you are.

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...
I think it could fit into Minecraft. I mean, We have Mine Systems, Booster Tracks, Pistons... Steve figuring out how to breath underwater wouldn't be farfetced.
Though i don't think a "Glass" Helmet is the best option, Perhaps just an actual SCUBA Helmet, Using Iron/Glass. Think of it like..
Iron/Glass/Iron
Glass/Iron/Glass

Which would create an Underwater Breathing helmet. Ideally It could simply triple/quadruple your breathing time (Similar to Enchantment) underwater instead of being a "Breakable" Item. allowing this to be combined with Aqua Affinity/etc to make a really long underwater time, though not infinite... Either way it would have a timer. The recipe would make more sense, and it would be more SCUBA-ee.
Regardless, I support the idea of a helmet for breathing underwater.

The reason I wanted it to take damage, is that you wouldn`t need very many high tier materials to make it, causing it to be very overpowered.

That's true, maybe everytime it takes for you to normally run out of air bubbles, it would lose 10 durability? It depends on how much durability it would have, I'm guessing maybe 75 - 100. And when it breaks, since it actually is glass, I think without armor you would be taking about 2 hearts.
Also, I think if like a projectile lands on your avatar's head, then the glass helmet will lose 30 durability?

Click or else....
I think the helmet part seems neat and makes sense, since you breathe from your head, obviously.
But I think that other glass armor would be a bit weird
