With the addition of hoppers, this newest update seems to contain some item management changes. I'd like to take the opportunity to give my thoughts on how this could be improved.
1. Grating
Grating is a new block which has a very simple function: It acts as a solid block to mobs and players, but to item entities (Items on the ground) it is transparent, allowing them to move through.
Currently fences can be used to somewhat the same effect, but it works only 50% of the time and is not at all reliable.
Possible crafting recipe:
=empty space
2. Smart(er) hopper behavior
The hopper currently needs three things:
1. A way to move things upwards.
For this I propose the hopper head (the wide end) being allowed to be placed on any of the six sides (up down left right front back) the nozzle end then could be rotated by shift-left clicking on the hopper, and it would be rotated in one of five directions.
2. A sorting mechanism.
For this I propose a new GUI slot for the hopper. When there is an item in this slot, the hopper will only process that item. The item in that slot will never be processed, and there may not be stacks of more than one item in said slot. If this slot is empty, items will be processed with no discretion.
3. A better method of giving items to various utilities
Furnace:
A hopper will automatically place fuels into the fuel slot, cookable items into the Raw product slot.
A hopper will only take from the finished product slot.
Brewing Stand:
Any potion, Awkward potion, Water bottle, or mundane potion will go into the slots designated for potions. Potion ingredients will go to the ingredients slot. A hopper will only take from the potions slots.
The only one I don't like is Hoppers being able to move things upwards. IIRC Dinnerbone already said the reason they didn't just add pipes to begin with is because he wanted it to be challenging to have full automation. Besides, moving items up is easy enough with a Storage Minecart and some rails. It's actually intended to be that way because Storage Minecarts were largely unused by many before the 1.5 Prereleases.

Personally, I think using minecarts to get elevation is much too noisy. Even though it is currently possible to achieve the same result using droppers, They are also very noisy from constant ticking. I would be happy using either without the sound, but that is likely impossible.
I honestly don't see why there is such an obsession with automating minecraft. So you can't move things up with hoppers, so what? What kind of ridiculous elevation are you moving them to that you can't use another method or do it yourself? I feel mostly the same about the idea of adding a sorting mechanic to them. Why don't you just have multiple hoppers that lead to systems that take the items to predetermined chests and you just put the right item in the right hopper. It's not that hard. And minecraft isn't about who's the most efficient

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.

The only problem with not being able to move items up is that if you want, say, automated item sorting, the most efficient way of doing this requires items to be moved downward upwards of four blocks. This means that if you want an automated storage room, the input chest will have to be on another floor, or above your head. I want, for the sake of design, the ability to put an input chest wherever you want.
