This has probably been suggested at some point or another but i did a brief search and did not see it so heres my idea.
Feathers have become more and more useful for crafting in recent updates. We use them for arrows, book and quill, fireworks. and in the future we are bound to have even more uses for them.
Every 5 minutes or so a chicken will lay and egg. What if it had about a 50 50 chance to either lay and egg or shed a feather. IRL chickens shed feathers and grow new ones through a process called molting. I think this would be a nice addition to the game. Or perhaps we could shear them like we do sheep to get feathers. and the chickens would regrow feathers after a set amount of time. Anything to keep me from having to wipe out entire populations of chicken to get feathers.
Let Me know what your thoughts are. Are feathers easy to get in your opinion?
I think Feathers are easy enough to get as it is. In fact, Chickens are the only animal that you can farm fully automatically if you feel like it. They are also the only animals that have two methods of making more Chickens. And because they only have a few uses, one of which is easier obtained from Skeletons. I have several thousand Arrows, most of which were gathered just by running around outside in the morning.
I wouldn't hate if this was added, but I don't see a need.

I suppose i see your point they can be produced through eggs. And i have already seen designs for fully automatic chicken farms using the new hopper block. Still setting up such a device takes resources and having enough chickens to make the device fast would generate alot of lag. But i do appreciate hearing a compelling argument. Perhaps you are right; perhaps that there are more important issues to be programmed at this moment but i still say i would love this addition.
How about it only makes the check for a drop when the chicken is flapping (that is, when it's falling from a height, is scared, or has been hit)? That's when the feathers are flying, at least in the cartoons.

I can compromise there. Wouldn't hate it, but it should not be a priority. And you are right, I have a very good computer and a decent automatic Chicken farm will cause a lag spike if I ever get close to it, at least for a couple seconds.

Yeh that's definnetly a thought. I think i would prefer if they just molted though.
You cannot shear a chicken. You would have to pluck it's feather one by one, causing the chicken a lot of pain. I do not support this part of the idea because then feathers would be too easy to get. However I like the idea of chickens molting.I support the idea of chickens molting. Half support, overall.
IRL i am totally with you. Plucking a chickens feathers out causing them pain is wrong. But this is a game and as long as your old/ mature enough to know the difference between Real Life and Game Life i think its a non issue plucking out chickens feathers. After all its a digital chicken it feels no pain.
There was a time when feathers came from zombies and were so easy to get that i never needed them. when then they gave zombies the rotten flesh drop instead. Since then i have learned how to farm almost every time of mob. IE skeletons. So i don't need them for arrows anymore but i do get where your coming from. Personally i want them for fireworks and books.
