In commenting on WildmouseX's suggestion for using the soon-to-come redstone block as an infinite fuel for the furnace, I came up with the idea for a battery-like fuel which would take his idea to a less overpowered standpoint.
here's what i had to say:
"Perhaps you modify the plan with something like a battery for the furnace: whenever there are smelt-able items in the furnace, the furnace cooks them until there is nothing left and then stops burning. give it 128 items worth of burnable fuel. so unlike coal, which continues to burn for 8 items-worth once it begins to burn even one item, it will stop burning when there is nothing left to burn
HOWEVER... this is still quite an op item I am suggesting so it should still require more significant crafting than just a single block of redstone. It may even require multiple blocks of redstone and potentially have to be made on an anvil.
So that's what I had to say to his idea, and to expand on that suggestion, I was thinking a possible crafting recipe for this item would be similar to this: (going for the literal appearance of a battery)
An interesting idea, but not really needed imo. You are always at two points in the game as far as fuel is concerned. You are either at the point when you are making every bit of fuel count because you are severely low on resources or you have more than enough fuel or the resources to get it easily.

I would have to agree with you on that. This was just an idea that i had and thought some people may like it
Now what could be interesting, is a battery that you attach to your furnace and it collects 1/8 second of charge for every item smelted. And then if you activate the battery by right clicking, it will smelt when there is items to be smelted but no fuel. Perhaps it can be combined with your idea of only smelting for the number of items in the input.
