I believe that we should have furniture in Minecraft. This wouldn't add any real purpose, but I know players have been asking for furniture for a long time, and I mean why not? It would be quite useful for decoration, which is half the point of the game, and I think you should be able to sit down with your friends for dinner if you wanted to.
How it could be implemented:
I think that furniture would be made like this: For each type of furniture, you have a specific crafting recipe. But, using different types of items on different parts of the chair, table etc. Could completely change the way it looks when placed. For instance: Say you want a normal, everyday chair. You take your Oak wood, make it in the shape of a chair, and whallah! You have your normal chair for sitting by the fireplace. However, say you wanted a chair made out of spruce wood? Well you do the same thing with that. However, you want something unique, so you use a combination of both types of wood - Oak for the back and the legs, but you have a spruce seat. You simply put the spruce wood where the seat is, and you have your custom chair.
Further decoration: What if maybe you are making a magnificent castle? You need something fancy, something elegant for your royal dining room. Well you take the oak chair you had already made, and you put it in the crafting table. Then you add in a gold ingot. This then adds a custom "Trim" to the chair, and your previously ordinary chair becomes lined with gold - perfect for your royal palace.
Changing the shape: Now you want a throne for your throne room. No need to fear, there is a way to make it! You simply use gold blocks as the legs, and a red wool for the center of the seat and for the back. Since you used a block instead of an ingot, the chair becomes a larger, throne. It is blockier, and more fancy (and expensive also, as it should be).You can do the same thing with say a wood log, or maybe a cobblestone block to get that "blocky" look, because for many circumstances, it looks better.
More types of furniture: So you have your chairs for your dining room, but now you want a table. There is a set shape already, and as with the chair you simply put the blocks where you want them to go. Then, you can again use the gold, or lapis, or whatever item you want with the crafted table, and you can add a custom trim. Tables automatically join with the tables next to them, even if they are different types. Thus, if you wanted a pattern on your table, you could simply make a checkerboard pattern with oak and spruce wood tables, but the trim will go along the table on the outside, as it should, even though they are different tables technically.
List of all types of furniture
Chairs:
I have gone into detail on this already, but here is what I figured the recipe would look like:
/ / x
x x x <----It looks like a chair I think...
x / x
The chair is customizable by replacing the "x"s as the type of block you want. If you use wood planks for the entire thing, it will be a wood chair. You can use many items for it: Wool, wood, stone, precious gem and metal blocks, bone (demonic chair/throne) and can customize it how you like.
Tables:
Recipe would look something like this:
x x x <----- Not quite a table, but it wouldn't work if we used the recipes for a helmet or legs.
x / x
The top would be the tablecloth I suppose, and the rest of it would be what is used for the table itself. Alternatively, one could use wood or whatever block for the top, if they did not want a tablecloth. You trim it like the chair is trimmed.
Beds:
Well we all know how beds are crafted, but what would happen is you could use different wool for the cover to change the color, and also you could change the pillow color by changing the color of the wool on the right hand side. Along with this you can trim beds through the same way as other furniture.
Drawers:
/ x /
/ o / <-------- The "o" is a premade chest, and the "x"s are whatever block you want to hold the chest.
/ x /
Drawers open horizontally toward the player, in the way it was placed.
Armor stand:
/ x /
/ | / <-------- the "x"s are wooden planks and the "|" is a sick.
You can right click it to open up the stand's inventory. It has 4 spots, one for each piece of armor. The only advantage of an armor stand - like the other things in this topic - is decoration! When you add armor, it shows it on the outside, allowing you to create suits of armor.
OK this has been edited to try to be less vague... I think. Tell me if there is anything I need to elaborate on I suppose.
Well yes its vague... but I didn't want to go to much into detail because it would overwhelm everybody. I feel like new suggestions should be edited over time, to find the best idea.
Chairs
Stairs. Benches
Stairs with signs. Tables
Fences with pressure plates. Beds (Already implemented, but maybe now you can customize what color it is?)
Oversuggested. Cabinet
Bookshelves with trapdoors. Drawers
Chests with doors. Armor stand (Decoration by holding holding armor. "Suit of armor" basically)
The only one I support - it'd be kinda cool. Fountain
Water block - come on, BE CREATIVE!
None of these are actually necessary and have been all made before perfectly fine using Minecraft's existing blocks.
We don't need Mojang to spoon feed every single thing to us.
No support.
I know there are ways to make this furniture, but its nowhere near as fancy as this would be. Also, yes I read the guide... I suppose I missed the vague suggestion part. I suppose I can add more detail.
