What if items like the stick, or the bone or something else did more damage? For instance, in real life it would hurt much more if you were smacked full on with a stick than if it was just the attacker's hand. I remember one time early on in a survival world, I found a bone and went around whacking mobs to death with it. So I thought - How come a bone doesn't do more damage? I mean, it's hard and all, and it can be swung faster than a fist. Well here is the idea itself:
Items such as sticks, bones, stone, wood, iron ingots, etc. do slightly more damage than they did before. Again, this isn't anything even close to a sword would do, maybe a stick does a heart more damage than it did before. This would come with the other drawback that if you attack a mob with say a stick, it has maybe a 3% chance of snapping in half, breaking the item. Obviously an iron ingot would have something closer to a 0.0001% chance, seeing as how iron is much less likely to break.
Another thing would be hoes I suppose. Axes are useful weapons, especially with certain plugins on servers, but as of hoes, they don't do much more than a stick would. I don't suggest making them op at all, but a bit of damage boost would be nice I suppose. Of course, it would cost the item's durability.
Pros:
Slightly easier to survive the early nights of minecraft
Would add a bit more realism, and it makes sense
Fairly easy to code
Balanced
Cons:
Slightly discourages use of swords... but besides that I can't think of much
I am completely open to criticism, and I understand that others might not want this however I figured it might be interesting.
I'm ok with this as long as it would be limited to just sticks and bones. I just feel that if your carrying around an iron ingot you should already be to a point where you have at least a stone sword, if nothing else.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
OMG my brother and I have conversed about this trillions of times! I fully support this idea - how come whacking someone with a piece of iron doesn't hurt more than a plain old fist-punch?

Well thats a valid point, but an iron ingot would hurt more than a punch, so its really just for realism.
I think it should be kept the same amount of damage (1/2 a heart) with a rare chance of dealing more.
Otherwise it would be a little overpowered.
Originally a stick would only do another half heart of damage, otherwise there would be no point in me making this. I don't think it is terribly op, but I can see your concern.
