well, technically, the crossbow would shoot the bolts faster, so it should have a longer range and be more precise. The bow is naturally less powerful, so it cant fire as far or be as accurate, no matter the skill of the archer; but personally i think that the bow should have next to no reload time (it all depends on how fast you can press Tab). So, in short, i agree fully with raquzzic2
Speed and precision are not completely linked. It doesn't matter how fast you fire the bolt, if it didn't fire directly straight from the weapon, its not going to be completely accurate. That said, I don't know how the accuracy of a crossbow and longbow compare. I do know that there are people capaable of pulling of robin hood-esque feats, like shooting out a candle flame at long ranges.
That is a comparison between crossbow and longbow. A crossbow has more draw weight, but due to its decreased size, exit velocity is almost identical. It goes on to state that at one point, crossbows had more range than bows, but their accuracy at those ranges is extremely poor. Even at later time periods, when crossbows were more refined, the crossbow wasn't that much more powerful than a longbow, and even then only at short range.
So performance-wise crossbows and longbows are nearly identical, with crossbows being many times slower to fire, but requiring less skill, and a skilled archer can fire much faster and with extreme precision.
A crossbow doesn't feel like a interestingly different weapon, esp. since a normal bow is point and click as it is. If a bow required you to pull back the string to charge up your shot, and gauge your angle in order to hit, then yeah, a simple point and click crossbow would be a nice addition. But the bow already does that.
If we want more ranged weapon options, then why not have something like shurikens or throwing daggers/axes? A bow and a thrown weapon would feel very different to use, have distinctly different steps to make, do different things, etc.
A crossbow, if it makes any sense, should be able to be pre-loaded, so the first shot doesn't take time. This makes it a opening weapon; fire the first shot, then switch to bow/sword to finish them off. This strategy would be acceptable.
However, since we also have a ridiculous carrying limit, you can put 10 loaded crossbows in your quick select, and get 10 rapid-fire high-damage crossbow bolts fired. This should not be allowed. We will need to find a way to prevent this.

I like this suggestion. But on accuracy, I haven't noticed but is the arrows accuracy affected by distance? Is there a effective "cone" of fire even if you don't move your aim?
Well, how about a feather then and iron bar for 2 bolts and still needs spider silk, and have it degrade faster but have the option of making the crossbow out of different materials for more durability and balance the damage?
I'm not sure why bloberous decided to bump this thread, but I might as well link people to Rangecraft Crossbows from it.
I do find it interesting how close the design that I came up for crossbows is compared to this person. Only difference is that I added an extra plank and forgoed needing to weave the spider silk and just let the Iron Crossbow have less durability.
I think a crossbow would make an excellent addition to minecraft, and wouldn't be far fetched at all. For the cost of two iron, you should always get 8 bolts, due to iron being difficult to get, much more so than arrows, sticks, and feathers.

I laughed at the first mention of "balance" on this thread.
they never learn do they,
balanced gameplay is really quite boring, each weapon should be good at different things,
a conclusion i learned from the ill-fated "GUNS ALL IN ONE THREAD" where the single reasonable notion, of "not a replacement just an alternative with different tactics" was silenced out by the unreasonable masses calling for the purposed "hand-gonne" to be actually quite unapealing in this notion of "BALANCE"
another thing I remember from that thread was this idea of how the bow and the crossbow should compare, (the
Bow, short range, light hitting, rapid fire
crossbow, longer range than the bow, harder hitting than the bow, slower rate of fire.

They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I told them I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard.
