I have an idea for Minecraft that I've been thinking of for a while. Hopefully the following or something similar can be added to make more advanced structures possible in the game.
A new conveyor like block that can be placed like a piston and can be configured (direction it pushes blocks) like a redstone repeater having 4 directions based on how it is placed (horizontal/vertical) and powered by redstone just like pistons
= New mechanical block = Air (of course) = Platform (can be any block except obsidian, bedrock and whatever else pistons can't move)
↑ → = Direction configuration for mechanical block
Example 1:
↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
Example 2 (periods added to fix forum post spacing):
↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
→ → →.........→ → → ...
Some might argue that there's no need for elevators, but I think it would be a nice addition to a modern-like structure. Maybe another good idea would be some way to fuse blocks together for moving them all with one piston or one of the new mechanical blocks so that the following is possible.
Example 3:
↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
The two double-stair blocks in the middle would be fused to their neighboring blocks so that when their neighboring blocks moved, so did they. If this or something similar could be added to Minecraft, I think it could have some large potential.
I understand that "conveyor belts" themselves have been mentioned and I even compared mine to the others. The ideas vary enough that I decided to post what I had in mind. Also this isn't so much for items but for blocks so that moving platforms are possible.

Not sure how needed it would be with hoppers though.
No. Stop.
