Ello good folks of the minecraft forums, i have come here to make a suggestion for you. If you would not mind I would like you to read through it and tell me what you think about it.
Well fireworks were added in to the game. So I bring you The Flare and Flare Gun!. You can build a flare by lining the outer vertical lines in a crafting table with fire charges, a firework in the middle, and glowstone above and below it. A flare would work just like a firework but with a few changes. It creates a 5x5 "Circle" Of glowing "miasma" in the shape of the firework used to create it. Anybody in it will be blind for five after they leave it for each second they are in it. (shoots upwards only). The "Miasma" Remains there for two minutes generating as much light as a torch, and attract hostile mobs, but scare away neutral or friendly mobs within a certain radius. Flare's do not scare away mobs or are visible unless it is night (still blinds).
The flare gun is crafted with iron filling the top and middle rows, and a stick in the bottom middle. Holding right click with the flare gun for five seconds would launch a flare in the pointed direction.
If fireworks weren't added this wouldn't fit as well as it does. It's basically a hand-held fireworks launcher. It can't be used for griefing. It'd make a terrible weapon. However, it has uses: Lost in SMP? Set off a flare and wait for people to see it! Need nearby mobs to go away? Set off a flare and watch them run!

yep, those were my intentions, The point to it doing damage is so that if you misfired you would take damage. it could be used as a weapon, but would be a terrible one.
I'm not at all okay with the idea of flares actually being able to damage people, and we really don't need a flare gun just to launch it. Their are flares that people can just throw you know.
Besides, flares are a modern day technology. There weren't people walking around during the middle ages carrying flare guns in their back pocket.

How about a sticky flare gun. It would shoot in an arch like an arrow, and would have the same initial speed as an arrow from a fully stretched bow. On impact too any wall it would stick to it and continue to burn for 1 minute. It would allow placing light sources that are too far for your "right-click" range for placing torches. Also it would be very hot, so it would ignite any material touching it if that material was flamable. It could thus be used to start fires remotely. It would be so hot that it would cause as much damage as an arrow shot from a fully stretched bow at point-blank range from an enemy. As such it would require more advanced materials to make sure the player couldn't get it early in the game. It would be made by crafting diamond and gold (2 rare materials). It would shoot flares which would be made by crafting with iron and Netherack Powder (which itself would be formed by smashing a block of netherack with a hammer, a new tool I'm suggesting). Crafting for the hammer would be (I = iron and S = stick).

I haven't yet though about the exact crafting formula for the flares and flare guns yet.
I meant that flares would be throw able, But the flare guns would launch much further, The Idea behind the damage is, It would take a long time and be hard to aim at people (they naturally go upwards like a firework, but can be aimed down), but people in it (usually the person launching it on a misfire) will be hurt by the light, or instead of damage how about causing blindness?
If anything, hostile mobs should be attracted to the flare. That would make you think before sending off a flare when in distress and can be used by those who want exp.

There also weren't people in the middle ages with solar panels on their rooves powering the lighting and music in their houses.
Or sitting by their juke boxxes for that matter.

I'd like mobs being ATTRACTED to a flare.
Also, "Miasma?" How about just setting anyone within a 2 block radius of the flare on fire instead. Miasma is just confusing. Keep the firework effects on though; otherwise it's not a flare.
Otherwise, support
I'd rather mobs be attracted to the flare, but anyways, I think that fireworks are good enough for signaling. If mobs were attracted to the flare, I will half-support.

well, originally it was supposed to scare mobs away, but maybe it is creeper mating season...

I kinda like this idea. They should be like the flares in Half-Life 2 where you throw them and they would light the area around you but would go out after a half a minute or something.

It seems like the normal flare but stronger, requiring a higher cost, and sticks to wall starting the wall on fire
