This idea is if lightning struck iron or gold or water, it would power redstone. Also if lightning strikes pistons, and they moved. That would include most redstone things like noteblocks and redstone lamps. Also there needs to be someway that lightning strikes tall objects.
On topic: Sorry, but I don't see how this could be at all helpful. It's an interesting idea, but I'd much rather see a rain/snow detector, since the chances of lightning hitting in a certain area are rare. I guess it could hit the entire ocean, but even then, what would the lightning detector be useful for? I just can't see it serving much of a purpose. Sorry, but I don't support.
As part of a weather generator mod this could be neat but as it stands, lightning is too rare of an occurrence for it to be incorporated into any kind of machinery.

Watch me mine for crafts, craft mines, fall down shafts and do a bunch of other things that may or may not involve blocks.
The only way this would be useful would be for the block to actually "Attract" the lightning to it, rather than wait for it to just hit it randomly, a very small chance.
