Glad you asked! It would allow you to re-claim any lava you had that got turned into obsidian. Have you ever played on a multiplayer server and someone decided to greif your cobblestone generator? Do you hate having to look for another source of lava because all the nearby caves and the nether had its lava already taken? Not any more! Now you can just stick it in a furnace with a bucket and you get a bucket of lava!
"but that's over powered and a tool for greifers!"
Not really. Obsidian is a lava source block that has been exposed to water, so the amount of lava you have before it got turned to obsidian is the amount you have after you smelt it. And greifers often don't stay long enough on a serve to get the diamond tools you need of mine obsidian, so its easier for them to just look for a block of lava and make a bucket, but its easier for you to just smelt obsidian.

Just a couple of issues with this idea.
1) Infinite iron, as the lava would need to be put into a bucket
2) This would not be useful in very many situations I don't think, and
3) There is no need for it. Lava is pretty common below level 13, so it seems pointless.

1) you put a bucket into the GUI so no, there is no infinite iron
2) there is not a lot of uses, that is true, but if you misplaced your bucket of lava and it turned to obsidian and
3) you don't want to crawl through a mob infected cave to get another one, this feature could help you a lot
With the Nether, I really don't see how this is needed. Sure it is dangerous, but if you take a few minutes and make a Cobblestone path to the nearest Lava ocean it really isn't that risky.

but why take that trip when you could just smelt the dang obsidian? I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be added....
"what would it make?"

Where would you put this bucket?
in the output slot of the furnace of course!

I don't think there's iron in obsidian
