This is simply a suggestion to alleviate a major issue I have with how chickens work. You shouldn't have to kill chickens to acquire feathers. Birds molt.
I'd go as far to say that there should be some roosting AI put in for eggs where they seek out tall grass, but that's asking a bit much.
Hmm... its an ok idea, but I dont think the current system needs to be changed. The only thing I don't like about chickens is how low the spawn rate is for chicken eggs. I sometimes throw a whole stack and only get one chicken, I wish that was a little higher.

That would need to be tweaked, yep. I could also go as far to say they should implement a rarer rooster mob that attacks things that get too close to chickens/other roosters for a half heart of damage and ensures eggs laid are fertile. You could also have rotten eggs, similar to poisonous potatoes.
You do realize that all things in Minecraft technically are both male and female? While the rooster idea makes sense from a realism standpoint having a mob with a specified gender would be strange when you look at the big picture. However I like the idea of feathers dropping randomly, so long as chickens still drop them when killed. As for the rossting thing you mentioned it does sound interesting, but I agree that it seems a tad much.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
I think it is fine the way it is. Certainly chickens molt in real life, but that would make collecting Feathers way too easy. And getting Feathers is already easy enough. I kind of think the point of having to kill the Chickens is because if you have a large Chicken coop but need Feathers you are going to have to suffer that period where you aren't getting as many eggs because you need to rebuild the flock. Changing that would essentially kill the need for breeding Chickens. You certainly don't need their meat, there are plenty of other food sources that are more efficient than Chickens.
Also, if you are needing an increased spawn chance on eggs you might want to look into the basic Chicken and Chicken Coop mechanics. I myself run two coops. One with 14 Chickens (which gives me on average 2 eggs per minute) and the other I spam Eggs in until I start to lag, then kill them all. You need to remember that with each Chicken you get from an Egg, the more opportunities you have in the future to get more Eggs. So I start with 14, and then with the 1/8 odds of getting a Chicken I wind up with another, then another 2, then another 2, and it keeps going up as I collect the eggs. With the Hopper, Eggs can even be picked up and shot back automatically now, so you don't even need to worry about your Chickens.

You farm chickens for eggs. You farm skeleton spawners for arrows. Feathers are of marginal value on their own, yet they require you to breed and kill chickens to obtain them. This renders them effectively valueless.

Also, the way it is currently means there is no cruelty-free way to obtain feathers.
The cruelty argument is lost on me, and should be lost on everyone with basic reasoning and logic skills. Cruel by definition is causing pain and suffering to others or disregarding the pain and suffering of others. If it cannot feel pain, misery, or suffering, you cannot treat it cruelly. This is true even with simulated pain such as the chicken squawking and running away. Besides, what about Leather? Must exceptions be made there as well? And Ink Sacs? By your definition of "cruel", making a Grinder out of a dungeon is about as cruel as you can get. Is cruelty acceptable if they are trying to kill you?
Beyond the silly philosophical argument, just because YOU farm a Skeleton Spawner for arrows, doesn't mean everyone does or should. When coming up with an idea, you need to think beyond what you do and take a broader look at things. Also, what is the point of farming eggs? The only reason I can see to farm them is to hatch more Chickens to kill. Cake and Pie are both useful at times, but other food is usually much more efficient. Especially when you factor in the hidden "Saturation" value. For example, 1 Bread takes the same amount of Wheat to make, and it almost restores as much Hunger and much more Saturation. There isn't usually a need for cake besides decoration because it isn't portable like other foods. You need to place it to use it and then it can't be picked up again.
So my next question is why else would one farm eggs?

birds do molt, but when they molt they often cover themselves in ants so that their skin gets covered in acid and that acid kills any parasites the chickens may have.
why not add a new mod called a giant ant that is half the size of a chicken? it would be hostile but chickens would be attracted to it. They would spawn in groups of 6 or 7 and have 1 heart of health but do 1/2 a heart of health when they attack you, but heal you chickens and make your chickens molt for 10 minutes, after which you chicken would wander away.

So, by your own logic: Eggs, feathers, and chicken meat are equally worthless. Might as well remove chickens entirely, then, I suppose.
And yeah, the cruelty argument was poorly phrased. Hence why I immediately rethought and removed it after I made that post. I was more trying to say that I don't exactly enjoy or see the point in having to kill my virtual chickens to get their virtual feathers.
And even if things like cake and pie aren't exactly the most economic foodstuffs, I still enjoy making them. Need pumpkin pie to tame bats, as well.
So could I just spam seeds on a chicken do get eggs, or not?
Ideally? It's something that requires a bit of cooldown. But you wouldn't need to physically apply the seeds. You could set up dispensers on a timer and the seeds would get dropped in every few minutes. Happy chicken then does its thing.

Well it depends on how you look at it. I LOVE Chickens, they are my favorite mob to keep. Why? Because they drop Feathers, which I use with Gravel to make arrows (I prefer not to use mob grinders). They also drop eggs, which I have already said I pick up even if I am also breeding them because free chances for more Chickens. And I love Chickens for meat, because it restores a bit of Hunger when cooked (plus killing them and cooking them both equal free-ish XP) and I can trade Raw Chicken for Emeralds if I am near a village, because at least one farmer usually wants raw Chicken. So to me, they are the most valuable farm animal after I get enough leather to make a proper Enchanting Room.
All in all, I don't hate your idea, I just think it would be messing with a system that is already fine, and it wouldn't be improving anything, rather it would be changing things with no measurable difference. It would be like doubling the rate at which Chickens lay eggs, then halving the chance of an egg becoming a Chicken when thrown. It all equals out and isn't broken, so why change it?
