there should be an option for tilting the beam 45 degress, so things like billboard ads are possible. Otherwise you'd have to have a light pole at equal height opposite the billboard.
I like the idea of the 45 Degree Angle... It would have the same effect as a torch on the wall, but no torch obviously. Great Idea!
This is by far the best spotlight thread I have seen. 45 degree ones would be cool too, but I don't know how well they could be implemented. They would definitely need to be their own block, you can't fit all possible states in just one block, unless it was a Tile Entity.

If angled Spotlights have their own block and shape, they can be placed facing you and directed 45-Degrees up by default. So, when you place it, you're lighting up and behind you... to face it down, just place it above you and in the direction you need. But this is one of those too complex things...

Well, what about 45 degrees like NW or SE? that makes it a bit more complicated. Although the placement could be done by dividing each block face into smaller sections and depending on where you are looking when you place the block, that is where it is placed. For example, if placing it against a Wooden Plank:
Assuming Yellow is South...
Yellow: Spotlight faces South
Blue: Spotlight faces East
Red: Spotlight faces Up
Green: Spotlight faces Southeast
Purple: Spotlight faces East, tilted up 45 degrees
Orange: Spotlight faces South, tilted up 45 degrees
And essentially it would do that on any side. Seems easy enough.

You you want 45 Parallel directional then it might as well be an entity, but then that would require more player accuracy when hitting far targets with the long range, and even then the position is rounded off...

Rounded off won't be too bad. One can just move the spotlight a couple blocks in either direction. However, the basic directions will be spot-on accurate and not require any of this stuff, which is nice.

I like the idea. It would be a great addition to the redstone update and is a new way to light things; support.
I like how so many ideas for redstone are coming out lately - hopefully Mojang finds this one and a few more to throw into the redstone update before its full release.

These could even be hooked up to a Daylight Sensor and placed on the underside of a floating structure to effectively remove it's shadow, a weird thing to jump to, I admit, but I've been wanting something just like this.

Exactly! I want it because lights placed on ceilings just don't work if the ceiling is tall. Lights placed on floors are incredibly ugly, and this would allow people to place lights on ceilings that actually worked to provide light to the floor.

Wonderful idea! However, I have a one change. Instead of being a full block, it had ought to be an entity. You can right click it and you're brought into a sort of first person view, like there's an eye inside the spotlight looking in the direction where the light is shining. Then you can manually point it at any object you choose with the normal look controls, so you can have it be pointed at an angle instead of just x/y/z. I don't think it would lag, since the game just has to detect the block that the spotlight is pointing at and place a sort of invisible torch there.

That might work... It might get really tricky, however, to make the spotlight actually look like it is pointing at the location you specify - one can only do so much with the pixel count of Minecraft.

See the thread here.
Unfortunately, that would be incredibly hard to implement as dynamic lighting currently isn't supported or feasible in minecraft. Maybe one day...
