I had an idea for a flashlight in Minecraft that actually produces shadows and whatnot. It could be crafted like this...
I G I
I R I
I I I
I= Iron Ingots
G= Glass
R= Redstone
... And it could be powered with batteries that you can charge and the charge is represented by durability. It would be crafted like...
I R I
I R I

R= Redstone
It would be handheld and would look totally bad-ass. You could change the color of the flashlight by applying dye.
Maybe it could also include handheld lasers and torches (handheld torches have durability as well. Don't want it to be too overpowered). Glowstone dust can be placed down like redstone and would glow slightly. The whole mod would totally redo the engine and would make light not only limited to three types of blocks.
Okay, fist of all, the "Dynamic Lighting" has been suggested quite a bit. Torches giving of light in your hand when you move, etc. This = lag. Big time. Constantly updating the light levels of every block in a certain radius will mean horribly horrible lag.
Secondly, a flashlight? Really? I know we work with magical dust as our main source of power, but I think that batteries are a bit far-fetched for someone who works mainly with magic. Also, you really haven't provided a "reason" for these things to exist. You say there are 3 light giving block types? Torches, Redstone torches, redstone wire, Glowstone, Redstone lamps, fires, nether portals......there are tons of things that give off light.
The one thing I kinda like about this post is that placed glowstone dust would give off faint light. Not too difficult to code, might be interesting. You mention at the end that this is a mod, but it's in the wrong section then. There's another thread for mod suggestions. Also, our lighting engine is getting an upgrade anyway, I think next update, to remove those nasty black patches that come from stairs and slabs.
Too realistic and futuristic, lamps would be better.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
