As of right now, 4 sand=1 sandstone. Which is quiet annoying when using a large amount of it, my suggestion is pretty small, we increase the amount of 1 sandstone gained to 4. So that way it balances out evenly. We've increased stone slabs, why not this too?

I don't quite get what you mean. Do you mean you would get 4 sandstone for 4 sand?
1 for 1 doesn't really make sense, as the idea is that you are compacting the sand into sandstone. I may agree with Hythrain about 4 giving you 2, but I do think the current amount is better, given how loose sand is and that sandstone is solid.
2 to 1 sounds good. I actually don't even bother crafting Sandstone at this point because it is cheaper to get a bunch of Sand, then going underground and replacing the Sandstone with Sand.

This idea is for realism. Sandstone is essentially compressed sand.
If you need a way of getting a lot of sand and sandstone, this procedure works great for me.
1. Find an even patch of sand in a desert
2. mark off a 16x16 square (or however large you like)
3. Dig down on each corner until stone starts on the block you are standing on.
4. Hollow out a 2 block crawlspace in the stone and sandstone under the sand
5. Line this space with torches, so there is one torch on every block
6. Begin digging up all the sandstone above your head, the sand will fall on the torches and drop.
This takes me about 30 min with iron tools (per chunk area) but with efficiency 4-5 diamond tools I was able to get the following blocks in about three hours:
2.5 stacks of cobblestone
128-ish coal (with fortune pick)
48 iron
24 stacks of sandstone
64 stacks of sand (or 8 more stacks of sandstone)
No net loss of torches, as I plan to convert the resulting area into a mob farm.
So, here's what we do. We must first build a compressor. Use several pistons, and make a stack of four sand ontop of each other. Make an infinite redstone circuit, and have the pistons press until sandstone comes out. Or, not.
there's nothing wrong with crafting it, I don't believe complex redstone circuitry should be necessary to create any block.

Keep in mind these are estimates
The problem with this for most of us is we don't want to have a giant hole in the middle of the desert, especially if it is near our base.
What about converting a few more layers of Stone into Sanstone and adding varying layers of Sand on the surface like Sand Dunes? That would alleviate the problem a bit too.

Try leveling one of those desert hills, and filling the top layer of stone in with sand, or finding a desert far, far away for the sole purpose of sand collection (that's actually what I've done)
But, it just makes sense.
Or at least at Mojang it did.

That sounds like the intent.
I don't agree with it being a 1:1 ratio, though. Maybe 2 sandstone blocks for 4 sand, but not 1:1.
