So, as of 2013, Steve has managed to make a light detector.
I'm amazed at the technology used in the sensor and yet he's lacking in so many other areas!
Sorry for any sort of sarcasm but I think the game is missing a relatively small thing which could greatly improve buildings and their lighting.
Surely Steve could have created some sort of light magnifying device to make some sort of floodlight. I believe it would be a great thing to do to help our builds look better and possibly be more functional. It would certainly help the massive buildings look even more grand.
It doesn't have to be a floodlight, or spotlight, just something better than goldstone or a tiny torch lighting up only a 5m area around it. heck, two sticks in the top and middle, surrounded by torches at the bottom and both sides to make some sort of chandelier would be better for lighting a larger space!
I haven't been very active on the forums, but visit many times a week for the great news. I hope one of the few posts I post can have some sort of effect. If not, we'll just have to stick to a field of torches... :/
Sorry if it's too close to it, but I think it might be worth another look given they're working on a redstone update, maybe it could mix in with that somehow?
Better lights are suggested way too much, anything brighter than glowstone would require a rewrite of the lighting engine.
Which is being done as we speak. The thing that dinnerbone siad was too difficult to code is dynamic lighting and colored lighting. Expanding the range of lighting is already achieved through numerous mods, and none are noticeably process intensive.
I support, and this idea wouldn't be hard. All Mojang has to code the block to do is to emit sunlight and you have a block that can emit light from high above (although it wouldn't be able to disperse farther horizontally than glowstone without recoding the lighting engine.

I'm always happy to see new posters.
Fair enough... Shame!
