I have always been annoyed at how slowly the nether portals have been. In the latest update (1.4.6) the portals act instantly, (which give no opportunity to abort) but still take a while to load the nether (at least on my computer).
I suggest that the game keeps the nether loaded when there is a portal nearby. This would allow players to move through a portal to the nether without having to load the nether first.
Several lag reducing options are:
Only load the nether when the portal is within 2 chunks.
Only load 9 chunks of the nether around the exit portal, and load the rest when in the nether.
Have a transition zone (see pictures). This would also allow a player to enter a portal, then decide to go back.
Have the overworld chunks load before the nether chunks (reduces the chance of world holes).
The main objectives for these changes are to increase immersion and reduce lag.
Edit: This post is not about the nether, but about the portals. My computer can (almost) always handle the nether, but the screen gets annoying. The above proposal is to remove the need for the loading screen.
Sorry for any confusion.
