I love using Lily pads in my farms and things like that, but being that they are non renewable, I find myself out trying to find new swamp biomes all the time to get more.
I think it would be great if we could farm them like normal. You could make lily seeds by putting a lily pad in the crafting grid, and then plant them in dirt submerged under 1 block of water. The plant would mature underwater, and then spawn a lily pad on the surface of the water above it. You could then harvest the lily pad and another one would grow.
I think it would be easy to implement and allow people to come up with more uses for lily pads because they would be more readily available.
If you think this is an awesome idea don't let the thread die!
It would be nice to have more, but the fact that they are non renewable makes their use something of an accomplishment. I don't enjoy going to get them but I feel good when my farm is all lily padded. They aren't a necessity anyway.
I would rather it be that when they are in Swamps, they will naturally spread similar to Mushrooms. That way you could just keep a few in the closest Swamp biome and check back regularly for more. With similar limitations to Mushrooms where there cannot be more than X in a certain area.

I do agree with you salmonman that it is a sense of accomplishment to use them, but I once made a water house and made the floor out of them. it was amazing, but it took me about a week of daily searching to get enough lol. I would even be happy with them spreading if in a swamp biome.

Agreed, it makes sense, mushrooms and lily-pads should have somewhat similarities growth in-game.

Ya, on one hand I wouldn't mind if they behaved like mushrooms. On the other hand lilys are a type of flowering plant and I think it should grow like a plant, not mushrooms.

Said it all. However, I have my farms in an ice biome, so the pads always break basically no matter what I do. Back to using slabs....
I would support this. Lily pads should be farmable. I do know that on some survival servers I have played they are a form of currency that is equivalent to the value of iron. However they were more of a novelty item. If mojang added some specific uses to them I could see this idea going somewhere. ie lily pads spawn frogs which you cook for froglegs?
