I haven't really elaborately thought this out yet, but what if you could hire villagers to come to a set location and do a job. Or, hire mercenaries to protect your home (Or burn down a village hehe). Feedback, ideas?
I will update this thread as we go
Possibilities:
Farming
Picking up after you ( ) and putting items left laying around in a selected chest.
Stealing and assaulting villages
Protecting your home.
Building (Walls and such)
Imagine if villagers could have their own little economy, it would be glamorous. Wolves, golems, testificates and cats, already support your character, I don't see the validity in the arguments. I support mercenaries, and I have made a thread suggesting one months ago, but I can't find it anymore. Basically, mercenaries are like wolves, cats, and golems, in that they attack hostile mobs, but the difference is that you can equip them with armor and weapons.
The mercenaries would live in villages, and every now and then there will be a zombie invasion, and it is your obligation to help defend them by mining for diamond or iron and equip them for the zombie invasions.
It does take the fun out of the game but it would be funny to see a Creeper in a black tuxedo getting you a glass of orange juice while you lay around on a lawn chair lol.

I think it'd be a tad more realistic (Yes... I know, that's a banned word in Minecraft) than them pulling a stack of wood from thin air ... or anywhere else for that matter. Additionally it adds a bit to the play, you want your wood? you'd better make sure that woodcutter you payed a shiny emerald to is safe...

I like the way your going.
Yet, this is needing for lots of work,
Farming for you? Building for you? Talk about being lazy yet. some players want to build themselves.
Protecting your house, however, zombies can easily kill an villager. (Unless on Easy and such)
Picking up your stuff seems... ridiculous.
So, unless if this gets fixed.
either way.
No support.
Mercenaries wouldnt be villagers, rather a new type of friendly NPC
By picking up stuff, I mean if something is dropped in your house, and you dont see it, the villager will put the thing in a designated chest. Farming and building is more for... Farming would be more of them harvesting and replanting crops. THis would help for massive divided farms. ALot of people are fans of tekkit's quarrys, imagine if you could hire a band of villagers to do the same. Building would not include very complex structures, rather walls and such. Remember that wall you've wanted to put around that NPC Village, well now you can.UPDATE:
WHat if villagers could build an economy? It would be quite interesting to see how it would turn out.
Isn't this suggestion essentially just asking for the Tale of Kingdoms mod to be implemented in Vanilla MC?
What is tales of kingdoms and what does it have anything to do with minecraft? Because as it stands it is a lame excuse to not implement something which has already been vaguely done by another game. Following your logic, world of warcraft shouldn't exist because there are already other MMORPGS out there.
There should be a limit on how many mercs/servants you can have maybe a limit of 3 other it would just take almost all the fun out of the game and i also think they would have 1/2 as much HP as the player

The part you have to remember, is
1. You must feed them
2. You must pay them (Probably a high price)

That's what animations are for.
Pay the woodcutter an emerald and he'll go cut a stack of wood... sending it /give like to you when he's done?

Villagers already trade...

That's different, you to obtain emeralds to get stuff you want or vice-versa. This makes you obtain emeralds to get people to do stuff for you.
