My suggestion is quite simple and although i searched and searched, it doesn't appear anyone has posted it as of yet.
The old wood placement when they incorporated placing wood blocks sideways was that the block would face you. I'm sure this took everyone some getting used to but it wasn't so bad once you did.
The new wood placement is where the wood block faces the direction relative to the side of the block that you place it on.
Without saying the new method is no good it does have one major flaw, when your trying to place the block of wood on the side of another block but have the wood facing up. This is impossible when your building in the sky or any considerable distance from the ground because you need an entire platform of dirt or something underneath just to place it facing up and then have to take it down again.
My suggestion based off all of this is to incorporate both together, in which the new wood placement can be used if a certain key is held down (maybe control) and the old wood placement where the wood block faces you is used under normal circumstances. ( I considered the other way around however if your crouching so you don't fall off your construct i'm sure you don't want another key to hold down )
Can you show a couple of pictures of the block faces? I'm having trouble visualizing what you're talking about.
Basically the old way would be if you were standing above you could place a wood and it would face you upwards as the picture above is
Below is two pictures showing placing the wood in the same way however the direction of the wood is reletive to the block now no as to where you are and makes placing wood in high locations extremely difficult unless a second layer is underneath it to place it on
i understand what you mean and i may not know the code, however if you consider it in simple terms, revert the code for wood placement to operate in the old way, and to work in the new way if a certain key is pressed down. the same way holding crouch prevents you from falling off. (its also possible that maybe the keybind for my suggestion could be incorporated into the crouch) it makes sense to me but i cant tell if it does to everyone else
Seeing how they added shift clicking to put blocks on blocks you normally activate by right clicking they could do this too. Best of both worlds.

I don't know. That kinda would be kinda hard to implement in the code as of right now..
Why? Mojang is a company fed by millions of dollars and great programmers designing a ever-expanding game. I'd expect this wouldn't be super-hard compared to adding new blocks ( I mean blocks that do things, not basic building blocks).

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

Yes that would be the ideal situation, even a simple mod should be able to do the job.
