Alright, hear me out before you decide to just skim for keywords or take the post at topic-title value; I've no doubt something like this has been suggested before. "ADD MORE BOATS" "I know we can get through water with boats, what about lava boats?" etc. That's not really what I'm thinking about here.
My idea is to take a basic wooden boat, and add things to it. Not a sail - that'd require adding a wind factor to the game. I'm thinking more like...an armored prow, so when you accidentally hit a shoreline your boat doesn't break; It wouldn't protect from everything - say you dock and a creeper blows up as you're leaving the boat; It'll still be broken. However...Even with the said "fixes" to boats and lilypads, I've noticed if I hit too many in a row (especially in multiplayer) my boat breaks anyway. Boat reinforcements would work like armor...kind of. It'd be limited to two main pieces, and you can't make it with anything other than Iron.
For an "armored prow" (It's a bit of a work in progress, I've no idea what else to call it) the crafting recipe would be, where R is Iron Ingot, and N for a Nail..
_______
||R||R||N||
||R||R||R||
||R||R||N||
Now, nails - or something similar - would be required for actually attaching the new prow or hull - Whichever you prefer. Reversing the corner ingots and nails would change it from prow armoring to stern armoring. However, I'm sure you'd like to know the recipe for nails? That's a bit further than just using ingots; I don't think, considering their size, you can use ingots in a shape. So you'd have to break them down. Place an iron ingot on a crafting table, and it can create 8 Nails. Once you exit the grid, it also drops 4 Iron Filings (or Iron Scraps?) which I've got a half formed idea for; I'll add it to the post later when I get it a bit more fleshed out.
Of course, you can't expect to just protect the front and back; Those two types of one of the main pieces. The other is paintable siding; You didn't think this idea would be purely functional, did you?
The recipe for siding would be rather simple; Where R is Iron Ingot, N is nail, and D is dye (optional) or Air if you don't want coloring.
______
||N||D||N||
||R||R||R||
||N||D||N||
The dyes make stripes along the top and bottom of the siding. You could also tip this on its side, like this...
______
||N||R||?||
||D||R||?||
||N||R||?||
The reason this might be better is that it allows you to craft left and right hand siding based on where you put the nails; On the left or the right.This allows more room for dye (or other additions, perhaps emerald or diamond encrusting?) and thus opens up more possibilities for personalizing YOUR boat.
Now, the downside to adding anything is the tool used to recollect your boat from the water changes from axe - which will get the boat back but not collect the armored additions - to pickaxe. A stone pickaxe at least; Wood would just yield sticks and planks and sometimes a nail.
Another upside is you could use these customized and armored boats for something akin to bumper cars; Add in bows and perhaps some pvp and you've got another way to play. The biggest downside to this means on pvp servers - which we all know are plentiful - the seas are no longer safe. You could usually sail in safety - Nobody can screw with someone sailing at top speed. You have to think fast and fire an arrow just right - You don't get another chance after the first shot to break it. With this, it'd make it easier to prey on ships. That's both good and bad, depending on how you look at it.
I would actually like this. As someone who enjoys sailing in Minecraft, this sounds fun. I agree, this might be better for a mod, but it does seem to be in Mojang's style. With wolf collar, dyeable armor, and fireworks, this seems like something they'd do. Support!
P.S. It also feels like you thought about this and fleshed it out, which is more than I can say for a lot of the topics here. Nice job on that!
Thanks, and I did try to make it presentable and...not just "HAY ADD ARMOR TO BOATS K?" - I knew that was no way to get anything good to come of it. Otherwise, it'd just be more spam on the forums, something I don't think anyone desires.
How so, if I might ask? Considering we can shape diamonds with our bare hands, I fail to see how making nails and nailing some armor on to a boat is too far out of the way.

...Anyway! Thoughts? Ideas? Yes, no, maybe a mod?
