Ever since 1.8 beta, people have been wondering why the new terrain is so boring and ugly compared to the old terrain. I think it's the lack of random mountains and the lack of randomness in biomes. In the new terrain generation, there are usually only mountains and large hills in mountain biomes, and all areas of the same biome type seem the same. Before 1.8, there were mountains and hills almost everywhere, and there were many different types of terrain that could exist in a certain biome. I remember looking at my server map and seeing one region far away with a lot of sand and mini-lakes and a few trees then another with tall mountains and forests. That doesn't happen anymore. Now, you won't see a sandy area unless it's a desert, and you won't see a mountainous area with trees.
I think if they re-add the random mountains and add multiple generation types for each terrain, the new terrain generation will be interesting again.
It may be interesting to have mountains spawn occasional. It shouldn't be found in deserts or swamps. As for the rest, I still see mini-lakes everywhere, and beaches also have sand. Trees are still mostly everywhere, but I agree that there should be more in the plains biome. I think that re-adding all of this wouldn't completely solve the boring terrain problem, but might help a bit. Half-support.
^ Is right, this would improve, but not fix the terrain. One of the major differences between 1.7gen and the 1.8gen, is that mountains were a sub biome, like rivers. So they could occur in most biomes.
