Now this thread is my reply to the Use for Dirt thread by pixel pain which was locked in the middle of me writing a reply. Not only is this my reply for what they could suggest, it is what I will suggest.
Now, if you look at the vanilla texture of dirt you can see little grey specs. My suggestion is that if you put dirt in a crafting square you get stones and mud. The mud part of dirt would act like a bucket when you use it in a recipe and it goes straight into your inventory with stones being the outcome. Now with the stones you should be able to combine 9 of them together to get a rock and 4 rocks together to get a stone block. If you do 4 stones together you get cobble stone. This will make it easier to get stone and cobble earlier on in the game.
With the left over mud you could put 4 of them together to make a mud block. This would look nicer than dirt. and then you could combine 4 mud blocks to make 4 mud brick blocks which would look better still.
This would add a very good use for dirt so please...SUPPORT this idea

Very creative. But rocks are not the best thing, as all rock blocks would look the same and we already have stone for that. I will let others decide on the mud block. Half-support just for the mud block, as I would like a smooth brown block.
I like this idea. I want to fight off a creeper by throwing rocks at it when I'm trapped without any weapons. Just pick up some dirt, stick it in the crafting square, and ...
the additional uses people said are good. mud could make you sink, suffocating you if its deeper than 2 blocks. on the other side: why in the hell does dirt need a use. ever terraformed a big span of land? trust me, you will run out of dirt!
That's it! I've got a suggestion coming on! +1 for you!

ANOTHER SUGGESTION: Being able to throw the rocks and stones, doing half a heart for stones and 1 and half hearts for rocks!

Support.
That suggestion is already suggested, but nice try. Any other uses?
