As of 12/27/12 it is confirmed that there will be a new ore in the Nether, we just don't know what it is. Here's my idea/guess for the new ore, Rubies. Rubies seem like a good idea because they have their own sprite, so they don't have to make a new one. Nether Rubies would be common uncommon(Because there's not any other ores) and they would be used for more advance Redstone machines. Here's my idea on how to implement the a couple new blocks.
Edit: The ore would be found low near lava, and there's 2 kinds of these ores. Soul Ruby Ore, and Glow Ruby Ore, (Thanks to Rex1900Roblox for Soul Sand idea) both gives the same (Rubies) but Glow Ruby Ore would be found up high near glowstone veins (Requires Iron or higher tier pickaxe.) and the Soul Ruby Ore would require and Iron shovel and be found low in the Nether, near the lava.
You can also craft a Ruby Block (Same as other Material Blocks) and can also craft 9 redstone dust (Not 9 Redstone can make a Ruby)
Also leave suggestions for some redstone blocks/uses for rubies(Not for weapons), and I may add them.
(I got a feeling this topic is going to get locked for wishlist/repeating suggestions.)
Fan Block:
X X X= Wooden Plank(Any)
XRX R=Ruby
XXX
A fan block pushes entities like any other would in a mod, but how far it pushes depends on how much the redstone signal strength is. For example, powering a fan block with a signal strength of 3 would make it only able to push entities 3 blocks.
The light detector powers a redstone signal based on the light it detects. For example, you place glowstone right on top of a light detector and it powers a redstone signal 15 in strength.

Let me see...
1. The ore should be mineable using a pickaxe IF the ore uses the netherrack texture with the minerals inside
2. The ore should be mineable using a shovel IF the ore uses the soul sand texture with the minerals inside. (I think we should use this since there is no ore right now which is mined with a shovel)
I liked the fan block idea but there is already a Daylight Detector coming in a future update. So I support.
Darn it. I made a redstone clocks idea which detects time like months ago and people said it was genious since it does not involve solar panels which is too modern.
Hmmm. . . This would be interesting, but the ore shouldn't be common in my opinion. It should be on the verge of rare.
It should be rare if it has a use other than wiring since
1. That "other use" could be really exploitable and
2. Wiring can only be done if you also have redstone anyway andthese pile up in your chest so having more of those nether ores will encourage using redstone more

Makes sense.
